Hello tibia players all over the world, heres a story of my time on tibia.

Well as times haves gone by, changes have happened, both good and bad, let’s take it from the beginning.

The date and time was Mar 17 2007, 00:41:27 CET, my life on tibia was about to start on the game Nova, I had earlier these days been introduced to the game by watching my real life cousin play, and he then asked me to join, to be honest I was wondering how long I would actually play this game with its poor graphic and simple looks, yet did I not know just how addictive it would become to me, anyways more on that later.

It all started with the creation of Frondo Lubo, I was a poor “noob” who didn’t know what this and that was, and yet I started out with creating a mage! A sorcerer to be exact, I started out by hunting in rookgaard, killing these oh so very hard rats (not even joking here), and I gained a level after having killed a few, and thought to myself “well this is not very hard, I will master this game in no time”, and so I thought… then after walking around on the island a bit, I saw a person saying “exura” and healed! (Yes this was on rookgaard), and I asked my real “what level do I have to be to be able to do that healing spell” and he laughed at me saying “level 9”, and I of course did not believe what he were saying, because this guy casting the spell was only level 5, so we got in to a huge argument about who were right and who weren’t, I ended up being the joke of course since it was a little trick this guy were doing! Im sure im not the only one who has fallen for this, he was standing at the bridge splitting the free account area and premium account area, tossing a gold coin, on one of the tiles, and using an “intense healing rune” while saying “exura”, so I was quite disappointed but walked on my own again, after having mastered rookgaard and finally becoming a sorcerer! I decided to hunt some rotworms in thais with my carlin sword, and after gaining 2 or 3 levels, I asked my cousin if he had a better sword, and again I was the joke (I didn’t know about wands), but well after getting my wand it all went so smooth, I figured I was brave enough to face monsters stronger then rotworms, and decided to explore the free account area around ab’dendriel, kazordoon and carlin, I found it all very interesting, I entered the dangerous mountains “femor hills” and killed my first goblins (I remember being so proud), and decided to explore these mountains.

Heres now a part im sure atleast 10% of the present tibia community has encountered.
I walked up a few stairs to find a few sheeps wich I easily killed to gain some food, BUT then I got attacked by a hunter, and yelled to my real through my headphones “HELP IM BEING PKED BY THIS GUY NAMED HUNTER”, and once again… I was the laughing stock of my cousin and now also my uncle (he was retired but then he came back to play).

After these few accidents with being a “noob” I became level 16, and decided to explore the areas again, I went back and took revenge on the hunter who had made me a jester to my relatives, after a great victory, I felt brave again and explored some unknown area (for me) west of kazordoon, and to this day I feel so sad about it, but I ended up in the minotaur area, and I saw my first and only ever since “The horned fox”, in my deffence I was a noob and did not know that this creature would drop me an item worth a few millions and decided to leave because of the crowding minotaurs.

And that is where my nova career ended.
My nova time ended because my cousin wanted to play on a pvp-enforced server (now called hardcore pvp), and I agreed.
I made my character and named it “Skede” this was also a sorcerer, playing inferna was not hard at all, I started my life on inferna in carlin, hunted rotworms on the island folda, everything was great!

After having gained a few levels, I joined my first pk crew, wich were so much fun, until we had to try and escape from some higher leveled guys, it ended up with the team getting massacred, but I had fun.

After some time had passed and I had courage to hunt again, I gained level 15, and started to train until I finally had magic level 15 so I could use this ultimate rune called “sudden death rune”, when I finally had it, I asked a player if I could test my sudden death rune on him and he said it was okay, so I shot a rune on him, and did a pretty sweet hit of 58 hit points, I was so happy although the next moment I saw myself being attacked by 2-3 players including the guy who said I could test on him, it resulted in my death.

After my death in the city carlin, I decided to move to kazordoon, where I met a bunch of nice players from a guild called “Ancient Tears” I loved being in the guild, they were my friends, for the first time on inferna I had friends, with their help I gained level 20 and gained my first premium! As the months went by I gained level 40 and retired from inferna, because my friends disappeared.

In 2009 I started playing tibia again, on the game world Obsidia, after having such a great time on inferna with the guild I was in, the friends I made, I decided to quickly try and find friends, and I did, a lot actually. Without my friends I wouldn’t be playing tibia these days, I couldn’t play without them. On Obsidia everything began for me, I learned how to have patience with quests, how to not have a crudge against people and just enjoy the game, and be sure you are always welcome to search for me to have a chat if you need help with something, I named my character on Obsidia “Poelse”, wich these days is a level 58 elder druid.

I have gained many experiences with friends, I cherish my good ones and try to leave the bad ones behind.

The future of tibia
In the future tibia I hope that people will keep enjoying the game as they do now, I know a lot of people complain because of the updates changed to much stuff in tibia, in my case, I can’t wait until the next updates comes around the corner, I love seeing what new stuff Cipsoft can pull out of their sleeves of us players and I hope they have a lot more to come. I don’t really wish for any changes to happen, except maybe the older players to rejoin the game.

I wish everyone the best of luck in the contest and I really enjoy reading your stories, hope you enjoyed mine, and last but not least I would like to say thank you to TibiaNews and TibiaVenezuela for hosting this contest. Happy anniversary everyone.

Kind regards Poelse, a long living wolf from Obsidia
the past is the past, the future is the future, so let it be as it is and live right here in the moment

Time Travelling: 15 years of Tibia!

Fifteen years. For many people, something this old is still youth. And the best part of it is that the youth is a great thing: We are productive, active, we have the possibility of meeting new people and it is a shiny period. However, when it comes to a game, this concept might be a little different and we might think that 15 means oldness. But with Tibia things are not like that. Even after 15 years, Tibia can still be considered youth, because it let people have great moment, meet new people and make great friends and also grant us thrilling moments during amazing hunts and quests. And, of course, it is still changing often.

If we want to understand better about its history and learn more about this amazing world, we will have to travel… to the past. Now, you are going to see notable facts of Tibian history as well as how it developed through the years.

The beginning:

The year is 1995 and it is a warm spring. Stephan Börzsönyi, Stephan Vogler and Ulrich Schlott are coming up with something new, something challenging… something that would change their life in a way that they would never expect. Creating an RPG game different from most games due to the possibility of exploring the graphical interface, that is what they had in their minds. After many plans, efforts, sweating and programming, their creation finally came alive on January 7th, 1997, the day when a permanent game server was launched at the University of Regensburg (the server’s “address” was rrws27.uni-regensburg.de). Their small creation, Tibia, was ready to catch people’s attention.

Image

(Tibia’s first version. This is certainly one of the most famous pictures of Tibia’s past)

The first brave hero of that world was called Alge and the incredible Sam was the its first merchant, while spiders, trolls and cyclopses were the first threats. Some time passed and people mastered the art of dueling against each other, known as player killing. Also, after many efforts and researches, inhabitants from that world created something amazing called “Automap” and that would guide them through the whole world. The version Alpha 3.0 was launched on 10/28/1997 and many new evil creatures showed. New citizens like Frodo also decided to settle in Tibian lands to start a new life, serving the community with their services and products.

Such incredible world certainly teased people’s mind and many fansites were created. If you think that fansites were something new, you are wrong! Back in 1997 there already were people gathering information and discussing with their peers about everything that went on Tibia. Yorin was the fansites’ pioneer. Over the years inhabitants of the Tibian lands learned new ways to create more sophisticated websites and since their knowledge was constantly increasing more and more of the so called “fansites” were created. The creators (gods) appreciated their job and the fansite program was created in order support their great and wise followers. These sites are extremely important because they offer people information in many different languages and also offer different kinds of information, not only news. Some of them, for instance, explain quests and bring detailed information about creatures meanwhile some other fansites have forums and grant players tutorials, information about books and also promote contests. Adventurers from all over the world can talk about their experiences and they can share their knowledge, solving riddles and getting more and more power.

Image

(Tibia’s 2.0 Alpha version, 1997)

After some time, humans learned more and more about magic that they even managed to create a new system. Those who used physical strength to fight developed and improve their skills. Also, people that were worried about those who lived far from each other managed to create a magic and efficient postal service that is called “Royal Tibian Mail”. Such changes were officially registered and accept by the creators on 05/20/1998, when they decided to make different tests (beta version) to make sure that these creations worked as intended.

The world’s population was growing in an amazing rate, more and more heroes and adventurers were born. As a result, the Tibian lands could not handle so many people so that the creators had a brilliant idea: They decided to create a replica of the original world and then they could split the population avoiding overpopulation. 07/02/1998 was the day they created the very first replica. (ps: A replica is known as “server” by tibians).

Mantus, King Crimson, Elleshar, Ralgar, Knightmare, Conaria, Wastl, Lomaxx and Apoc were notable humans that helped in the world’s development and expansion. These brave warriors explored new areas and discovered new dungeons and creatures. They were so courageous that they were constantly finding new places and challenges, bringing them to other people’s eyes.

In 1999, the creators noticed that Guido Lübke was special. Something about him was just... different. It did not take too long until Guido figured out that he had the spirit of a fourth creator that, for some reason, was not known by humans and even by the other creators. Obviously, his powers and virtues would not be wasted so that he joined the other 3 gods.

On 11/03/2000 people named their era “Tibia 6.0 Beta Version”.

On 11/11/2000 it was possible to establish a new limit of humans that could be active (logged in) at once: the number was increased to 300, which nowadays might looks like nothing when compared to the current limit of 1000. However, back in the past, this number was something astonishing and was a real proof that Tibia and its creators was becoming more and more strong and skilled!

The Constant Evolution:

2000

November and December

As said above, there were already fansites in the past and it resulted in the creation of the fansite program that developed and became what we know today. However, many other things that are common were created long ago.

The “Who is Online?” page was improved by the creators. It was necessary that they could easily see who was active and the community itself had to be able to access such information. The population “boom”, however, forced the creators to improve their ways to control online people. This change was announced on 11/14.

The “Voting System” (currently known as “polls”) was implemented on 11/26. The creators had in mind that it was of utmost importance to know what the humans thought and needed. This system let them get this information in a easy way. You know, such strong and important beings cannot show up in Tibian lands without being “harassed” by mortals.

There also used to be a banished player’s list (nowadays constantly required by the community), but it was removed after some years. The creators knew that order should prevail in the lands and this list was a way to show that rules not only had, but were being followed.

Needless to say, constant changes were also part of that incredible world since always. New creatures and areas are constantly found and it is great because it avoids boredom and also give humans opportunity to get stronger. Also, developing and studying new spells and techniques is always interesting and welcomed as well as quests, which give a unique sense of thrilling and mystery to Tibia!

On December 12th brave adventurers announced that an Orc Fortress was found and the creators decided that a revamp of Rookgaard (yet called “newbie island”) was necessary. Some other places also came to public knowledge. The poison also became more effective and took longer until its effect “wore off”. After all, it was necessary to control the population.

Also, did you know that during this time the murdering was not allowed due to Christmas? Yes! Believe or not, murdering would lead to banishment since humans should keep the peaceful spirit of Christmas. Check out the announcement:

” As Christmas is a peaceful time, we have temporarily abolished player killing. This means that you cannot attack other players directly or with magic missiles. Understand that it is forbidden to kill other players in general until 1st January. Player killing will be punished with banishments. Also, it is no longer possible to push other players into magic fields or down a hole. Next year, we will have a poll about keeping this state or returning (partly) to the old one.”

2001

Some humans had special abilities and could develop their magic spells and skills faster and more efficiently than some other people. “The Big Four” (gods) could not predict and control the mighty and merciless Ferumbras. This fiendish sorcerer showed unbelievable magical abilities and strength and spread terror. It’s said that his mind used to be controlled by someone somehow connected to the creators. Moments of this day were frozen by Durin so that he would keep it as a memory. This day was January 31st.

Image

(Ferumbras’ attacking players in the past)

Not only creatures and dungeons are part of Tibia. People’s safety had been also very important since the beginning. On 03/11 a new security tool would prevent people from getting active for five minutes if their attempts had failed five times in a row. Probably many people had already passed through this, but did you know that when it happened, you would receive the message “Your player is banished” instead of any other message. It used to happen because the environment was unable to tell the difference between banishment and an account’s locking out. It probably used to scare many people, don’t you think? Imagine what they thought when they heard that they were banished… they probably thought that the gods’ rage were striking them.

In April, a poll concerning Payment Methods for Tibia was created. 40% of the community was will to pay a small fee to keep their advertures and it was a signal that the Premium Account era would start soon. The “Premium Account” is known as “Divine Gift” among tibians.

On 05/22, Gameloft – one of the creator’s ally -, that used to control Tibia replicas, cut their help and obviously the replicas had to be kept safe in some other way. It was decided, then, that the creators would control the replica server instead of giving this task to someone else.

The time passes and more areas are discovered! In October, many new great and famous places were announced to the public, like the Green Claw Swamp, the Ice Islands, Femor Hills, Fields of Glory, Ab’dendriel and Ghostlands. It was an extremely important announcement not only due to the great number of new areas, but also because these areas’ importance. Until today they are very famous and often visited by many people and also hold many quests and mysteries!

Image

In March, more records were broken. On 07/03/ Tibia’s forum got more than 10.000 threads and the mark of 600 humans active simultaneously was reached. Tibia was definitely counting on a more active community and growing faster and faster.

On 07/21, an extremely important step was given: Humans would need an account to stay alive and active. This account was like a register, which help creators to control people’s data and grant them even more safety. From this day on, tibians would get an account number (nowadays known as “account name”) and a password, both secrets. Trading account was already against the rules by then and only one character could be active at once per account. Fortunately not many humans found a way to deceive the creators and enchant their souls to become undetectable so that they could be active in many different bodies at once with this new system.
Maps are of utmost importance for explorers. The map section was added to Tibian Library in the last day of July and it is a very interesting section until today. People can see the whole Tibia’s Map and also read interesting information about cities and islands. This Library became a famous place among brave adventurers.

Tibia Version 6.3 became available on 09/24 and brought changes related to the rule enforcement specially. Within this update, the Criminal Record was added as well as the “Counsellor” position (nowadays extinct) and the “Complain” button for the criminal record. Counsellors used to help the Rule Keeper Minions (Gamemasters) and were appointed by them too. They used to help GMs by investigating and reporting rule violations and they would also help children by answering their questions.

In the middle of October, using macros – illegal and unknown kind of powers- was finally declared as illegal by Cipsoft (Creators’ and their followers alliance). Check their official announcement:

” From now on the use of macros is forbidden in Tibia. Using tools to automatically do or repeat certain actions in Tibia is considered a violation of the Tibia Rules and may lead to temporarily or permanent banishments from the game. Please play the game as it is meant to be played: by yourself.”

On this very date, the “namelock” punishment for illegal names was also added. It is easy to see that the rule enforcement is already growing up and become stricter, punishing more people and controlling unfair and offensive situations. Respect is something that should be considered of utmost importance in Tibia.

It was on 11/02, in the version 6.4, that Edron was finally created. Knightmare (one of the creators’ ally) was the big responsible for creating this area that holds incredible hunting places, houses, guildhouses and, of course, mysteries. Houses, by the way, were also created in this very day. Needless to say it was important that people owe a big thanks for these changes since they gave them a chance to live the streets and have a cozy and warm place to sleep and keep their items as well as receive friends and visits! Only three days later people were already able to get a Divine Gift by helping the creators so that they could enjoy Edron.

Image
(Edron's in the "stone age")

There is a video on youtube that was used as a teaser for Edron’s launching. You watch it here.

Last but not least, on this date it was announced that Cipsoft was finally founded! The Big Four and their allies simply decided to formalize their union. Did they imagine how big and rewarding their efforts would become? We’d better keep on walking on this time tunnel and see what’s going to happen next so that more answers will come.

On 11/20 Carlin and Kazordoon got new GHs. It was clear that more and more houses were about to come and that the whole community had nicely accepted such a wonderful feature! On this same day, Cipsoft decided that once a replica had reached its limit of active humans at once, only those who owned a Divine Gift would be able to get activated then.

In December the “renaming” became possible in order to change names of those who had illegal names. That is another case of how interesting the destiny is: In the future, renaming characters would become something accessible for everyone who felt like changing the name! On the 19th day of this same month, the two existing replicas were named as Antica (the first one) and Nova were. Cormaya was also created.

2002:

If you think that the 10th/15th anniversary events were the only commemorations related to Tibia’s anniversary, you are wrong. On 01/07, Tibia’s 5th birthday, humans earned a special reward after getting their Divine Gift (in this case, a 7-months premium account): The so famous “Shield of Honour”. Events like that are going to happen in the future, but… it is not time to talk about it yet.

Image

(One of the owners of the Shield of Honour)

Later in 2002, specifically in February, promotions and its benefits were created and so did the guild list on the official website. Promotions were also an important change in and they prevail until today, making it possible that tibians have different spells and different behaviors during hunts, wars, etc. Expecting new promotions in a close future fortunately is not far-fetched. Once again, we will have to let time tell us. On 03/26 guilds were able to have their own boards in the forum.
During this year, a great sandstorm, coming from nowhere, stroke Edron. Tibians became intrigued by that so they decided to investigate. Many ships were built and adventures threw themselves in a jorney to found the origin of this storm.

On June, a great desertic continent was found and it was called Darama. After that, sandstorms were not reported anymore. Its new hunting spots like pyramids and the desert itself offered many new creatures and brand new kind of scenario. Of course it is not necessary to say that many mysteries were also brought up. What can be hidden in the haunted ruins? What is buried on the desert? Years ago people asked themselves these same questions and… they do that until today.

Image

(Tibia’s Global map after Darama was added)

On August 28th a new client that was launched. Tibians now had a gender - Male and female -. Can you imagine when there was no difference between characters? It is not known why creators didn’t do that before. Weird, huh? Also, people developed an ability called “Utmost Immersion” (aka “Fullscreen”). With this ability, tibians could dedicate their minds to the adventure only, that is, all their strength, thoughts and intelligence could be focused on their hunts, quests and wars.

November brought something innovating to Tibia: The first Non PvP replica! This replica was named Secura. So far, it was impossible to stay 100% safe from someone else’s attacks as one could be on Secura. Also, the protection zone blocking of 60 seconds was added. No one has ever managed to explain how it is possible to protect people like that, but it is almost certain that it is due to the creators’ magic.

2002’s December was a pretty interesting month. A new kind of item was created: Magic Items. These items still exist and are helpful both for experienced and inexperienced tibians, like stealth and life rings. Since we are talking about December, it is impossible to forget that many new things are always discovered and announced by this time!

Knightmare shared his ideas with the creators, which resulted in the creation of Venore and in improvements for Rookgaard. Consequently people would get more houses and children would have a better opportunity to develop their skills at Rookgaard. The Big Four created a “death record” too, which would register people’s death and its reason. A new ability was also given to tibians: massive telepathy (known as “private chat channels”). People could chat with their friends and relatives much more easily.

Image

2003

During February, greedy summoners learned that selfishness is not interesting so that they have started sharing 50% of their experience with their summons.

On 05/20, the creators could not contain their excess of energy so they had to spill a bunch of their energy on a new creation: a mini version of Tibia. They have created a whole new universe and not a replica for this version of Tibia (Tibia ME).

In July 23rd, Cipsoft announced that a new record had been broken: 8.000 tibians were active at once and the creators wanted to raise the replicas’ limit to 1000 tibians active at once.
Like always, December was a month full of changes. The creators decided that the so famous Amulet of Life should not work anymore and then it got replaced by the famous Amulet of Loss. Also, creatures were blessed with extra intelligence since they were not being too challenging and were treated like fools by humans. Tibians who owned a Divine Gift also got new exclusive outfits as a small present from the creators, since they were bored to see so many repeated outfits.

Image

(Old Outfits for Premium Account players)

Many new tibians, many new questions, many new problems… Helpful and wise tibians from now on could also become a tutor if they fulfil basic requirements and pass a test. That was the best way creators found to help beginners and take them away from danger and traps!

2004

In March, tibians finally got the “Party Mode”, which allowed them to improve their skills and make team hunts more attractive since their souls not get a mark if they killed or attacked someone else. The gods though it was also time to think about excessive player killing too, since the world was becoming too violent. Their decision was that abusive murderers would be banished from Tibia for a while to learn their lesson and leave innocent – or not – people alone.

July 15th brought something important for Tibians: The Revamped Survival Guide (known as “Manual”). It was written by Cipsoft and contained explanations about everything existing in Tibia.

During August, adventurers published semestral newspaper with their new histories and knowledge: This time, they had crossed the southern mountains of Darashia and another huge desert was found. After exploring it, they found a great city full of pyramids ruled by a Pharaoh called Arkothep. This new desert also hid tombs and many new undead creatures like Djinns.

Since the beginning, some people were talking so much that they were making annoyed and dizzy, which resulted in the creation of an instant-muting-system. What a relief for our ears!

Another revamp on the Voting System was made. The first thing Gods wanted to hear was what name people would prefer for the new upcoming coin (worth 100 platinum coins). As you know, “Crystal Coin” was the final choice.

In December, many new items got a new look and with the growing population of Ankrahmun, more and more dungeons were found around it. In addition to that, some creatures were prepared to cause panic during random raids, so it was important to pay attention and be careful all the time.

Hello, world!

2005

The time has come! On 01/28 Ston Abia was born. This new tibian did not know many things and he was also unaware of the official fansite. He did not know how he could regenerate his life after being hurt by a rat, he did not know how to climb a ladder or how to communicate with merchants and priests. After some time, he got enough experience and became a Knight.

Image

(Ston Abia in the middle of a slaughter)

After he learned many new things, he decided that PvP replicas would not please him so that he got the gods’ permission and split his soul. The second part of his soul was called Abiston and he made his live on Pacera. Meanwhile, the Supported Fansite list on tibia.com was finally created.

When he found out about Tibia.com’s existence, Update Teasers showing Tiquanda were being revealed. Since he was still a child, he did not know what an “Update”. Then he searched for the apes and elephants and but he found nothing.

In August 9th, he finally understood what was going on and he felt thrilled to explore Tiquanda and Dark Cathedral and try out the new Soul Points system. Only on 09/04, though, he would make his first hunt at the Dark Cathedral. A few days later, Senior Tutors were introduced to the helpers’ community. After that hunt, he kept training his fishing and gained another skill point!

Image

(Abiston’s first hunt at Dark Cathedral)

October 17th was when Abiston got his first Divine Gift from the gods! They promised him it would last for 180 days. The very first place he visited was Darashia and he was taken aback with how intense and thrilling this very first trip was!

Like always, December promised changes. And this time, there were severe changes! Gods created rods and wands and enchanted them with special powers in order to make druids and sorcerers a bit stronger. The mana regeneration was also changed as well as the necessary mana to cast different spells and make runes. Also, the way the world looked like drastically changed: Water, mountains, trees, grass, rocks… everything got a better look.

(Buying the promotion!)

2006

Its firsts months were calm, nothing too shocking or great happened. However, lil’ Abiston was becoming stronger and had already passed level 40.

(The Postman Quest – Completed)

In May, Senior Tutors gained the ability to report impolite humans that said something offensive or that broke a rule and the partial-mind-block (known as white/ignore list), to avoid telepathy with some people, was granted to everyone. In this same month our little hero also made a notable hunt: Giant Spiders! Ah… old times…

Image

(After a funny hunt at Blood Herb's Giant Spider Respaw)

A breath taking archipelago was revealed to the world’s eyes and a brand new city was founded: Liberty Bay. Although a wonderful looking place, the archipelago held many new threats like pirates, a new home for Ferumbras and, for the first time, an underwater place full of quaras. Humans also gained the ability of swift-hand: They could use items in much faster than they were used to (items in hotkeys is how we call it). However, this ability demanded a lot of stamina, which became limited to 56 hours. Last but not least, tibians were gifted with a bunch of new – some old but reworked - outfits and addons in order to give them some more fun and break the always-similar-outfits situation.

The October of 2006 meant a house for Abiston! For the first time, he owned his own house after leaving his small shop.

Image

(Abiston's first little house)

Danger… fear… hell… treasures… the Pits of Inferno were opened
in December. Would tibians be strong enough to defeat these fiendish creatures? Which treasures were now obtainable? What would be the consequences for failing?

Among all that fear and worries, good news followed: The community was getting richer and depots were becoming a mess with all that money – something that could call thieves’ attention. Fortunately, some trustable people created banks to take care of all that money. Meanwhile, the elvish magic was enhanced and Ab’dendriel got many new trees and an outstanding new look!

2007

Ten years had passed since Tibia’s creation. Not only Cipsoft but tibians also had a lot to commemorate. A thousand Divine Gifts were given to some lucky mortals and many creatures got presents. Obliviously, most of these presents ended up in the hands of humans, who could get something nice. Unfortunately, on 01/30 the commemorations were over.

Image

(Tibia’s 10th anniversary commemorational raid)

Love was finally recognized by Cipsoft in February and girls created a heart shaped cake as well as lovely cards. In the following month, Ferumbras finally made his triumphal back to spread horror on the replica of Harmonia; however, he was defeated. On the following days, an inhabitant of Harmonia (Mateusz Dragon Wielki) would reach level 300 for the first time in history. Meanwhile, Abiston had reached level 70.

Now let’s skip to June: It was almost July when fantastic ice islands were discovered. Thanks to the new technologies and spells that allowed flying carpets and ships become more resistant and could now explore such hostile areas. From now on, Magic Level turned into the most import factor in spells and runes strength and paladins could also learn new spells like ethereal spear or enchanting their own spears.

July 26th was a very special date. Finally, 100.000 people had gotten Divine Gifts active and a very lucky person got a very special present. World has it that Abertt also got a Dragon Scale Legs as an even more special gifts from the gods due to the achievement that had just been earned.

September brought great news for the community. For the first time, the evil Ghazbaran was defeated (on the replica of Candia) and a total of 58.407 people were active simultaneously. In the following month, tibians’ and gods’ eyes would witness a new record being broken again: 58,718 people were active at once. It was Tibia’s heyday.

By this time, Abiston had already braved the Banuta Quest and the Scrapper Arena as well as the Ice Island Quests. Even more: Level 80 was a reality for him.

(Another interesting hunting spot in the old times: Tombs!)

From November 27th to December 4th tibians received a blessing
from the gods that gave them the ability of learning much more when killing a creature. With their mind much keener, they would learn and improve their abilities much faster. This way, they earned twice more experience for every creature they hunted. Even more: November 28th was epic! 64028 people were breathing Tibia’s air simultaneously! This number was not overpast until nowadays.

If December’s first four days were filled with great news, imagine the news that would soon follow! Later this month, tibians mastered the art of enchanting weapons with enchanted gems and some elements were also mastered, like energy, fire, ice, holy , death and earth. Creatures also become stronger against some elements as well as resistant against some others. Another ability tibians got this month was the shared experience when hunting with their buddies. Last but not least, swimming became the most attractive hobby for many tibians especially on beautiful beaches and hot days.

Santa Claus also gave Abiston a great present: He let him face The Horned Fox! Abiston killed it and was taken aback when he saw the incredible nose ring and dwarven helmet among the beast’s possessions. 600k was his profit only with the nose ring! Nice present, huh?

2008

January was relatively calm. On the other hand, in February a terrible demon spawned in Venore and scared many people. Rumors were that Cipsoft was mad at humans so that this demon was sent to punish them. However, some time later everything was explained: It was just Stan wearing one of his fancy costumes that would now make part of Tibia’s carnival. What a relief!

On 03/11 something called periodical-please (subscription, for players) was created by the gods. With the periodical-please, people signed a magic contract in which they assured they would do something special every month or every three months to please the creators and then get a Divine Gift.

April is the month of the fools. Last December, jesters found their way to Tibia and those who have already died picked this very month to haunt people. From now on, their haunting season would take place every year, beware with the Undead Jesters! In the end of April, an unnatural disturbance in the natured made some creatures drop twice more creature products, like fish fins and ape fur, but it did not for too long.

A colorful and hectic July marked this year. Rosemarie is a Dryad that preserves nature and would help people to grown their own amazing flowers, like Midnight Bloom. From this year on, Rosamarie would visit Tibia every July as well as her sisters, the raged dryads.

Image

(

July’s winds gave Kazzan inspiration to revamp the whole city of Darashia. Not even a penny was saved in order to make his city more attractive and beautiful. Not only Darashia was changing, though. Demonic spirits broke in PoH’s surface and the so called Demon Oak made of it its deadly lair. Rookgaardians also built a brand new island for young tibians, where they could learn even more things about this magic world. More experienced beginners should head to the Isle of Destiny to continue their trainings.

Image

(Dararashia's depot before its revamping)

In addition to that, merchants developed a new trading system… you know, big cities, big community, demanding costumers… Agility and effiency were even more important now. Uff! What a turbulent month.

In order to improve their control over the world and make their job more efficient, Cipsoft members decided to enforce a difference between the Royal Messengers and Rulerkeepers (Community Managers and Costumer Support, respectively) in September.

In October, a new malign force released its curse over Darashia. The Mutated Pumpkim made its first appearance and swore that it would come back in the following years looking for vengeance.
Intelligence… technology… danger… devastation… wars… secrets… betrayals… December was not going to be calm and peaceful. Yalahar was a promise of a huge variety of challenges, quests and dangers.

Image

(Abiston completing “In service of Yalahar” Quest)

Among all that fuss, the creators concluded that humans were to detached. Something had to be done, so many measures to encourage party hunts were created and the telepathy between members of the same party was improved (party channel).

Also, hunting in groups was a great opportunity for tibians to learn and improve their skills, so that party hunts were now giving extra experience.

2009

If you are wondering what happened to Abiston that nothing was said about him in 2008, the problem is that he couldn’t get any Divine Gifts since April until this year’s Janurary. He had decided he would take some months to think and live in a calmer pace for a while. His coming back, however, had to be something notable. Right on 01/29, he finally reached his so dreamed level 100!

Image

(Abiston reaching level 100)

On the very following day, the gods released their wrath over scoundrel cheaters and 4959 of them were punished for their behavior. An unfortunate war between humans and gods was beginning.

In February, Cipsoft asked humans to “confection” backpacks and send a sample of their ideas to them. The best samples would be produced in larger proportions and would become more popular.

In the beginning of March, another 5163 humans were banished due to their despicable behavior of cheating. The gods also became more lenient with the deceased: They would make their sacrifice for bringing one’s life back a little more smooth. In addition to that, they decided that blessings should also protect against corpses thieves so that the more blessings one had, less thieves would try to touch their belongings after they were dead. Last but not least, tibians’ intelligence was also raised a bit for a week so that they would, once again, learn and develop their skills twice more when hunting, which would result in the gaining of twice more experience points.

A mortal being would be enchanted with amazing spells and became part of Cipsoft in April. As many people recall until nowadays, it was time to say hello to Ogrey, who had joined the Royal Messengers team.

When it comes to May, the most notable event took place on 27th, when everyone who had never had a Divine Gift before would not get a small piece of it for seven days. Needless to say that it was an awesome surprise for all!

Image

July was time to love: Churches would finally let tibians get officially married! In adittion to that, violent citizens would not be banished anymore. From now on, their soul would be haunted by a dark symbol called “Black Skull”, which cursed their spirit and would chasten their souls if they died.

All around the world, some citizens also ask for help to bring some creatures down. Grizzly Adams, for instance, had many work to share with other people. By the way, many creatures were modified by the gods either because they were too strong or too weak.

The backpacks that most pleased the gods were finally being produced and scattered in Tibia. Additionally, a new chef would teach humans how to make delicious meal: Jean Pierre was just waiting August to make his first appearance.

And finally humans learned new ways to control their thoughts and actions that would make many situations less confusing and clearer (creation of server log). Fortunately, Queen Eloise was not able to control her mind and wishes so that she had Carlin getting a brand and incredible new look.

On August 23th Abiston was about to face a challenge that made even the bravest warrior afraid: The Annihilator Quest. He could hear the demons, feel the fear and then, the lever was pushed. There were screams, fire, panic… but no reasons to give up. After some time, however, demons were claiming his dead body. Fortunately Apolinario, Abiston’s best friend, survived.

Image

(First attempt to complete the Annihilation Quest)

Out of creativity, the gods had the Royal Messengers listening to people’s suggestions and interesting tips that they could use to warn or entertain humans. The best ideas were picked and every now and then, the gods’ voices crossed the lands making people hear what they had to say (this event was known as “Create a Message of the Day”).

This year, November looked like December! Whoa, so many new events and changes! Ten Light Basins scattered through Tibia had to be kept burning in order to keep evil creatures away. It was the first time that such measures against these creatures had to be taken and, considering their strength and thirsty for destruction, it was certainly not the last time people would see them around.

The way each replica worked also changed a little. On replicas that no violence was allowed guild wars became allowed. On replicas that killing other people was allowed but restricted wars could also be official. Meanwhile, the most violent kind of replica got some restrictions since even the most brute warriors were frightened by the violence, therefore Blessings and the Amulet of Loss became available and murderers would not yield experience to anyone.

Last and no less important, humans who met some requirements and pleased gods with some services and valuable coins would get a chance to move to a different replica after this very month.
As if November hadn’t been exciting, December was out of this world. Dragons, lizards, orcs, wars, corruption, drakens, beasts, betrayals, revolution, rebellion, mysteries and many other worlds were being used endlessly. The reason was clear: The great continent of Zao was found.

Even more, the results and conclusions of many researches weres released and it was concluded that many creature pieces like an orc tooth and centipede legs could be used in magical processes so that some people like Malunga and Fiona would be interested on buying this kind of product. It meant that people would now collect many items that they did not use to, like spider’s mandibles, bunches of troll hair and vampire teeth.

By now, Abiston was level 140 and had recently reached the Magic Level 70 and had already braved the so called Zao’s Arena.

Image

(Abiston advancing to Magic Level 70!)

2010

Rolling heads welcomed 2010. Gods’ wrath was unleashed on 21th and 16,598 humans had their souls banished for a month.
Meanwhile, they learned that it would never be forgotten again and their criminal record would haunt them forever with the so feared Eternal Gods’ Curse (permanent final warning).

A month later, scientists found a way to change tibians’ sex as well as modify their name. The process, however, was complex so that people would have to contribute with a small fee in order to be able to go through such changes.

Changes were about to bloom in the spring. In March people would notice that when they were well rested they could learn much more from their hunts which resulted in extra experience every time they killed something (bonus stamina). Too tired tibians would be so weak that they would not be able to get anything from creatures they killed, that is, low stamina, no loot!

Still in March, The Rule Keepers (costumer support) had developed a new way to report annoying and offensive names. Their device allowed everyone to report such names and therefore measures could be taken.

For the first time humans would be able to communicate “easily” with some of the gods. The Royal Messengers would listen to people and forward questions to the gods and the most relevant and interesting questions were, more likely it would be answered. This event was called “Chill and Grill” and took place for the first time in April. Some weeks later, the Rule Keepers had their ears and eyes improved so that to could hear everything naughty that was said and could also keep their eyes on cheaters (we use to call it botting/statement reporting system, though).

June’s first week was a memorable period for Abiston: After gathering 100 Spider Silks by himself, he finally got all the necessary items to get his full assassin outfit, something he had dreamt for years.

Image

The shiny sun of July’s summer illuminated a new huge area in the northern Zao, including Razzachai and the Emperor’s Garden. However, something else was shining… rune emblems and jeweled backpacks, maybe?

Magicians’ minds were also illuminated an innovation: Potions and runes functionally was better understood and therefore they became stackable. The mind of gods caused another change, too: They forbid creatures from carrying bags. As if not enough, even Jean Pierre’s brain was working in something new: A brand new cookbook was found in his kitchen!

A reward for different prowess of a tibian was created. A document from the gods would proof their work and efforts and they could show it for their friends and family. This was popularly known as “achievements”.

In the beginning of August, Abiston reached level 150 and sometime later he finally braved the annihilator!

Image

(Successful Annihilation Quest!)

Three days later Cipsoft announced that the so popular Rule Keeper Minions were no longer going to exist. Most people were definitely upset with such terrible news. On August 23th, the final goodbye was babbled.

Image

The world was afraid and in danger in September. The biggest, strongest, cruelest and most monstrous creature ever was ready to destroy Tibia: Devovorga. Fortunately 71 replicas managed to kill her… at least until the next years.

Yellow leaves were falling from the trees by now. Do you know what it means? If your answer is “autumn” and consequently “patch”, then you are right! The creators decided that the wish for a revenge should last longer than the normal so that one’s revenge feeling would last 7 days after this season (that is what we now by “orange skull”). In addition to that, when a person was ambushed and trapped, s/he could receive a divine strength and push their enemies with great intensity (swap). Priests could now bless people with the “Twist of Fate” blessing too.

Last but not least, bloody-handed killers were not going to be easily forgiven. The last twenty people that participated in someone’s murder would have their souls marked. Definitely, even being careful could still be dangerous.

And once again it is snowing! But what beyond ice was about to fall from the sky?

After many researches and attempts, many items showed to interfere in creatures’ behavior in a positive way. A leather whip, for instance, could make an outstanding midnight panther obey a human! It did not take long until many other creatures were tamed.

Worried about the winter, Rottin Wood and his men worked to build new cottages and revamp old ones, completely changing Outlaw’s visual. Simultaneously, Dwarves were working to give the Colossus a new and wonderful look.

Image

(Click on the image to see the Old x New Colossus)

Considering we are talking about December, we should not be surprise about drastic changes. Magicians were publishing their latest researches and teaching new spells. However, tibians had to accept that casting spells was not so easy as it seemed and therefore they would have to wait some time to catch their breath back until cast the same spell again (cooldown).

Many rumors were also created – or were they true? -, like those that told a story about a weird island that have been spotted close to Cormaya and that a ghost ship would settle in Thais sporadically. Even more, the witches from Venore seemed worried and anxious to get some ingredients and the Combined Magical Winterberry Society was about to ask for people’s help.
To top it off, since October Abiston had been renewing his wardrobe with new clothing and accessories. Full Warrior, Shaman, Barbarian, Brotherhood of Bones and Oriental outfits were achieved during these months.

2011

New year, new life, new decoration! Both Queen Eloise and King Tibianus ordered a new fancy painting to adorn their castles. After a lot of back breaking, the painter’s work was a success! Obliviously, there was more new stuff in this month. By discovering new and hidden secret codes, people could get a Divine Gift and also they would be able to communicate using only a very special and maybe not so common language using their new telepathy techniques (we call these features by “Game Code” and “English Channel”).

February was funny. Gods were teasing humans with the mystery surrounding the Serpentine Tower by quoting interesting ideas and theories. Some days later, the strange island south to Cormaya had its bridge built on some replicas and a gigantic cake was found there! Surprises were not over yet, though. Soon the gods raffled some Divine Gifts for humans who met certain requirements and the event was called Fabulous February.

Image

(Fabulous Februay's promoting pictute

In March, Cipsoft announced that they needed testers for their new project, which the could modify a person’s soul and mind and therefore his/her way to see and interact with the world would be drastically but positively changed (we know it as “Flash Client”). 371 humans were picked to put their souls and minds under testing right on 23th and Abiston was one of them!
Something pretty sad took place in April: on April 1st it was announced that the Royal Messenger Ogrey would leave the team.

Image

(CM Ogrey)

Fourteen days later, the final goodbye was said but soon many “hello’s” were going to welcome Tjured. Fortunately, good news would follow within the next days: A new insecticide was created by farmers and it would help to keep the infamous flamer-buggers and troll-buggers away from the forums (creation of restrictions to post with “noob” characters). Additionally, King Tibianus and Queen Eloise were about to receive their paintings while shields and weapons were adapted to fit exclusively in a specific hand each. Last but not least, after months looking for the mighty Undead Cavebear, Abiston finally tamed it!

Image
(An expedition to the Lich Hell might hold good news...)

Tears, shrill screams and demanding imps made of May an exotic month. For the first time in history, a Demon Mother had to share her maternal duties with humans. What a tough task, huh? But – a big but here -, this was not the only surprise this month. On 05/10 Abiston passed the tutor test and the tutor community got a new member!

On June 8th the creators and their helpers commemorated Cipsoft’s 10th birthday and they made 100 small present boxes fall from the sky to commemorate it. Needless to say there was a Divine Gift inside each box. Shortly after that, Cipsoft declared that their experience was finally working well enough to be tested in every single soul and mind – with some risks, of course –, so that volunteers were welcome to help them from now on (open Beta Flash Test).

Such a huge and dynamic world like Tibia could not be the same day after day. Places changed, caves flooded, people needed more help and so on. In july, these changes became definitely notable. Just to give a few examples, insects sporadically attacked Greenshore’s crops and destroyed it. Different races of demon started a war and, each day, one side got advantage and firestarters could raid Shadowthorn from times to times. And as most of you probably know… horses were finally found and could be rented and even tamed! A dream was finally true for many tibians!

Another dream also concretized: Abiston reached level 200! Was that all? No! After 7 months braving the jungle, surviving to mighty hydras, violent tropical storms, monstrous behemoths and flesh-eater plants, he tamed the legendary Midnight Panther on the following day! His happiness was so intense that his other three failed attempts to tame it did not matter from that moment on!

Image

(Burst of happiness: Level 200 and a Midnight Panther being tamed!)

Do you remember when Grizzly Adams started offering new tasks for tibians for the first time back in July of 2009? After listening to many complaints that the missions were too demanding and exhausting, he concluded that changes should be done. As a result, in the end of September he finished his projects and changed the tasks. A couple of days later, the creators announced that some Divine Gifts would have a small… ok ok, a big and ferocious reward: A shadow draptor!

Tests? No, thank you! In October, Cipsoft changed the way tutors would get the tutorship. The Rule Keepers’ view and hearing were sharpened and they would constantly watch their helpers and helper-aspirants work in order to valorize the tutorship and encourage humans to be more helpful (introduction of the “Thank You!” button).

November 9th… <Klonk klonk>. His heart was beating faster. He was showing it a giant shrimp and it was hungry, it was heading to him. His move was fast and crafty and he had just managed to tame the third member of the “The Big Three”. It is about Titanica I am talking about!

Image

(The third member of “The Big Three” being tamed)

The clock ticks away and here we are, getting closer to the end of our travel through the time. If you are not up to date, I will tell you the most recent happenings: Two dangerous races are in the middle of a violent war. Both the inhabitants of The Hive, known as Hive Born and the inhabitants of the deepest waters of the ocean, known as Deeplings, want power and new territories.
December was not about Deeplings and Hive Born, though. After years and years, merchants and postmen finally finished their magnificent project: The Market. Trading became much easier and faster and the economy was in front of a new era!

Once again, changes were constantly happening all over the world. Noodles decided to spend his bundle of energy and then go out for a walk pretty often, making his owner worried. Rivers eventually flooded at Zao and Outlaw Camp as well as Wyda’s pot of boredom.
To top it off, Abiston reached the magic number of 80 magic levels!

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we are leaving the time tunnel…

2012

Here we are, in 2012, commemorating with style Tibia’s 15 years, fighting bosses, getting presents, bonus experience and the most important: Having fun!

I would like to thank you for reading this article and for being part of Tibia. Hopefully, you are all enjoying the festivities of Tibia’s anniversary and everything that Tibia has to offer you.
Do not forget that it is up to us to make this game better and that we, players, are always carrying and using a pen and using it, writing and drawing the history. So let’s use it wisely!

The End

Author’s note:

Most of the information I got to write the article is from Tibia.com. I used their News Archive and made this chronologic sequence of the facts. Most screenshots are mine but since some of them are not, I added their “origin” below.

I hope you liked the article and enjoyed it as much as I did. I learned many new things while writing it and I tried to make this article as dynamic and differentiated as I could, avoiding simply writing down the facts and nothing less.

I understand it is a bit too long, but after all, there are many things we cannot ignore and we are talking about 15, fifteen, years and there definitely are many facts and histories we should remind. However, I had to leave some details behing since they could be kind of repetitive or maybe were not relevant at all.

I would also like to apologize if there were typos and grammatical mistakes. Even though I reviewed the text more than once, it is common that something deceive our eyes. :)
Another apologize is owed due to the screenshots’ sizes. The most recent ones were way too big so that I had to display them in a much smaller size than the older ones. However, if you click on them, the original picture is going to be displayed. I hope it did not bother you too much.

Yours, Abiston.

Hello folks! I am a Brazilian player called Rasunik. :-)

After this (very) brief description of myself, I kindly invite you to come along with me as we take a trip into the past and present of Tibia. Perhaps you still haven't completed fifteen years old, or maybe just like Tibia creat... <cough> you are almost forty. <giggles> Regardless, as you may know this lofty MMORPG called Tibia just celebrated its 15º anniversary on January 7th 2012. It's undoubtedly an astonishing mark! However, much has happened from the past early days of Tibia's creation till the game reach this milestone. Due to limited time, I will mainly focus in the old days. Anyway, recent changes can be found in a lot of fansites such as wikis, or even the news archive in the official website.

Are you ready? ;-)

To begin with, do you know how the idea of creating Tibia has come to light?

Project: Tibia

Steve, during interview to TibiaNews wrote:Uli, Stephan and me went together to grammar school, where we developed a really cool but completely unknown real-time strategy game called "Strike". When we finished school in 1995 we were looking for a new challenge. At that time we spent our first days in the computer-pools of our local University and made first contact with the Internet. In '95 there were no MMORPGS. No WoW. No Everquest. No Ultima Online. Hell, even the WWW wasn't really popular back than! So the question was, what all those geeky students were doing in the computer-pools all night long. The answer was: playing MUDs! Multi-User-Dungeons are the ancestors of today's MMORPGs. They are only text-based and have no graphics whatsoever. Since we've always been big fans of the Ultima games we thought it would be a neat idea to create a MUD which looks like Ultima. That's when the idea for Tibia was born."

The picture above shows the four creators of Tibia Stephan Vogler (Steve), Stephan Börzsönyi, Ulrich Schlott (Durin) and Guido Lübke - who in fact started as a normal player and joined the ranks of an Executive Officer in 1999. You can take a look at the old CIP team page that includes a picture from the times they were still young students clicking here.

CipSoft wrote:In the Easter holidays 1996, the project started with concrete plannings. We developed basic routines for handling objects and implemented an editor (MudEdit) for creating the map and the objects. Moreover, we experimented with sockets and the TCP/IP-protocol in order to set up a communication between two hosts. By August, we had a server program running on Linux and a client program running on Windows ready and could do our first steps with an avatar on a map created by MudEdit.

Why "Tibia"?

Guido, during interview to TibiaBR in 2005 wrote:The name was rather made up as a fantasy name. Only later the Latin anatomic meaning of the word became known. Thenceforward it became a "running gag" to give also other areas anatomic names like Fibula and Mt. Sternum.

1997

1997 arrived and was about to go down in MUDs/MMORPG history. January 7th was the day the german students launched a permanent server at the University of Regensburg. There was only one game server called Tibia and the world was nothing but a tiny island with a small village named Thais. There were no creatures, no NPCs, no quests... Maybe you are wondering: "What the heck would people do in this game?" The "gods" themselves talked about it in the first manual:

Tibia Manual 1997 wrote:There is no goal implemented yet ;-( So you should only try and have fun. But you can also use the program as a media for communication, and those who are curious, can start a voyage of discovery on the big, randomly created map.

Tibia was only available as a Windows 3.1-version, therefore you needed a PC with Windows 3.1 (or higher), 4 MB RAM, 3 MB free space on the hard-disk and an access to the Internet by Windows-Sockets (e.g. Trumpet Winsock). <eek>

Since there wasn't much to do in-game, CIP (as their team was called before the foundation of CipSoft) added the board games chess, checkers, mill and tic-tac-toe on January 13th, 1997 to make the game more interesting. Also, back then players could speak to every person logged in (broadcast) typing #B.

CipSoft wrote:Besides that, the development went on. The first non-player-characters (Sam) and monsters (trolls, spiders, cyclopses) entered Tibia. Of course, it was possible to fight against the monsters. Moreover, the third dimension was introduced, at least graphically, and there were papers to write permanent messages. Enough stuff for an update to version Alpha 2.0 on June 3rd, 1997.

CipSoft wrote:Death was much more expensive than it is today. Death meant the complete loss of all your belongings and experience points. Although, the loss of experience points had been reduced very soon, the absence of depots could turn a rich man into a beggar within seconds. All your items had to be carried around all the time, which was not only heavy but also highly risky.

CipSoft wrote:In the summer holidays Tibia made great strides: temporal effects, cumulable objects, liquids, a new fighting system, the automap, movement in all three dimensions, different times of day and light sources, and a complete move/use-system. Additionally the small map (160 x 160 fields) was replaced by a bigger one (512 x 512 fields) that contained the first buildings of Thais (the Temple, Frodo's tavern, Gorn's equipment shop, Sam's armoury, the Castle) and several dungeons inhabited by new monster races. This was worth another update: to version Alpha 3.0 on October 28th, 1997.

If it's now practically impossible to witness the creators online in-game, at those times all players had the chance to visit and meet "personally" the three programmers. They would be online in Tibia every Wednesday at 17:00 MET.

1998

CipSoft wrote:More and more players detected Tibia, mostly from Germany but also some from all over the world. Some were even so fascinated that they created Tibia-homepages of their own. The first was Yorin's Tibia Homepage, published on January 28th, 1998. Meanwhile we developed a system for magic, introduced skills and vocations, and implemented the Royal Tibian Mail and the depot system. Additionally, we changed our homepage giving it a modern outfit. Tibia seemed to have grown up. Therefore we decided to start the Beta phase on May 20th, 1998.

CipSoft wrote:This update was a great success. People stayed longer in Tibia, and so there was someone online nearly at every time. As the server got too small for so much activity, we bought a server of our own (tibia.uni-passau.de) and set it up at the University of Passau on July 2nd, 1998.

Tibia still had less than 20 creatures, and the stronger ones, Dragon and Daemon (old Demon), dropped the charming Helmet of the Stars (now the hyper-rare Golden Helmet)

Taghor, during interview to TibiaNews in 2005 wrote:The characters where not animated and jumped form square to square. And we had around 50 people online at one time. So it was a very small community. The Gamemasters back then were called: "wizards". So you can say we had no gamemasters :) But we had 5 wizards perhaps? I renember the following people as wizards: Knightmare, Maegwin, Lostboy and 1 or 2 more i think. Can't renember 100%

One of the frequently asked questions was whether Tibia would remain free or not. The answer was:

Well, I don't speak german but using an online translator I got something like this: "As long as we set up our server at the University of Passau, we will not ask for any money in Tibia. Because of the ever-increasing data load it's possible that we eventually have to set up a dedicated server with a private provider. Then of course we will collect fees if we are unable to finance our project through advertising."

Tibia could not have grown so fast without the help of CIP's many assistantes. A lot of regular players spent their time to improve Tibia by creating new items, new areas, writing stories, helping the community as wizards, etc. In 1999, these were the names shown on Tibia website:

1999

CipSoft wrote:Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth the source code had become very opaque and unmaintainable. It was nearly impossible to add new features without adding new bugs. Therefore we decided to swallow the bitter pill of completely rewriting the server! It took us nearly one year to fulfill this task. On June 18th, 1999, we finally succeeded in starting phase Beta 5.0 with the new server, more stable and open to further ideas.

CipSoft wrote:After that, a lot of improvements took place, too many to mention them here. Many users helped us by designing areas of the even bigger map (1024 x 1024 fields), drawing new objects, writing stories, or taking care of the game as a game master. The average number of players online grew from about 50 in summer 1999 to about 150 in summer 2000, thus making Tibia the greatest online role-playing-game in Germany.

With all those ugly graphics, why did people start and keep playing Tibia? Taghor, an old-school player speaks!

Taghor, during interview do TibiaNews in 2005 wrote:Well i askes myself the same question over and over again. It can only be the community. The friends you find in the game. The guilds. That is what makes this game so interesting. Tibia was my first online game and i din't know these aspects of this game, but i found out that i really like that.

For example, a typical day in 1998.. Well there were several posibilities how the day could happen :) But tou could log in the temple go out and stumble over one of the PKs around (Bluesoul for example) then the day was quickly over :) most of the Pks in those days used Makros to shoot Runes in a very fast way. You had no chance to avoid death. Another very favorite place to spend oyur itme was the ghoul room north of thais. Many people gathered there and drew numbers who could kill the next ghoul and the entrance to the room was blocked with flowers so the ghouls could not get out. The only monsters existed were: rats, spiders, poison spiders, ghouls, rotworms(few), cyclops, beholders, dragons and demons.

Aswell, as a newbie you had a very intersting aspect of getting equipment. If you were brave enough you could run into the dragon lair and try to grab stuff from the ground that the highöevels left there cause it was worth nothing. The things you could get was: Enchanted Plate Armor, Helmet of the stars and Fireswords, which were the best equipment back then but well they weren't rare :)

<sighs> It must have been really cool to play at that time! I could spend hours just looking at old screenshots! But I had no idea Tibia existed back then, and I was likely playing games such as Total Annihilation and Worms Armageddon.

Anyway, we gotta move on to the years forward!

2000

New Millennium: 2000 Year. From what it seems, this is how the Tibia board looked like at that time.

At this stage Tibia had the following creatures: Dog, Sheep, Pig, Deer, Rat, Snake, Giant Spider, Bug, Wolf, Wasp, Troll, Poison Spider, Bear, Orc, Lion, Skeleton, Orc Sperman, Rtoworm, Scorpion, Dwarf, Minotaur, Orc Warrior, Slime, Wild Warriors, Minotaur Archer, Dwarf Soldier, Ghoul, Beholder, Orc Shaman, Fire Devil, Witch, Minotaur Mage, Hunter, Cyclops, Minotaur Guard, Dwarf Guard, Orc Berserker, Orc Leader, Demon Skeleton, Dragon, Giant Spider, Hero, Dragon Lord, Daemon.

Some of the happening in this year:

Still in January, "as of now, no more than 150 players can be online simultaneously."
"The new Linux client has a bug. Some monsters graphics were reversed, currently shows a rat an Orc, etc. So be damn careful!"

In February, five new gamemasters were appointed: Morgan le Fay, Gork, Deathwalker, Peppi and Podi.

In March a news announced a minor upgrade with would bring the newbie island, a new island designed for newly created characters created by Knightmare.

Knightmare, during interview to TibiaNews in 2004 wrote:I created rookgaard with an eye on balance. I even checked the monsters loot and aked CIP to change it, to fit the needs of rookgaard. Another things I did was to reduce the use of graphics since CIP wanted the people to leave rookgaard for the continent and see 'more'. So I used only basic graphics mainly. Since I created it from scratch and could control which item is acessible what way I could actually use items as quest-items. Of course it can be abused due to the system and the same people can do a quest again and again but thats hardcoded, nothing I can change. This is rookgaards major flaw: the quests are misused and almost impossibly to be 'solved' by real newbies but its techically the only way to make quests work at all.

The situation on rookgaard was special though. I had control over ALL resources, could not only balance a single dungeon, but a whole enviroment. Given the fact I could have the npcs sell what I wanted and edit the monsters loot I had the chance to create somthing I fellt the whole Tibia should have been. I would love to ad more such quests on main too, but thats technically impossible yet, not to mention the given distribution of items.

I have certain ideas to improove the rookgaard experience, but this might have to wait until there are more posibilities to ad quests and such things.

Here you can read the news about the creation of Rookgaard (in German).

At those times, a character would only be rooked on level 3, therefore it is still possible that you find a level 4 in main island, such as Lord Marshall, who was interviewed by TibiaVenezuela in 2009.

As you may know, Knightmare ("the fifth god") was added in-game as a story-teller during Tibia's 15th Anniversary festivities. One of the thing he says is that they had no separate GM-characters in those days (check here - he tells nice stories about past)

CIP wrote:Since nobody is allowed to go back from the main isle to the newbie isle. Therefore there will be new low level gamemaster characters who supervise the newbie isle. Their names are: Schneff, Kahl, Seymour, ImaNewbie, Taib, Algol, Undine, Caldera, Arwen, Selrahc, Helios, Rimun and Ender Speaker for the Dead.

Poor Partos...

In April The playerlimit was set to 200. Two news followed on:

We are sorry, that the server crashed a lot of times during the past days. CIP's working hard to remove the responsible bug. By the way, it's forbidden to duplicate items. If you do so, all your characters will be deleted! Play fair.

From now on, there will be no more mana and hitpoint regenation in protection zones. Hopefully this will reduce the number of people standing in the depot.

Still in April (06/04/2000), Stephan Vogler said they needed help from people to create better graphics to Tibia to replace old graphics. Have a look.

In June, CIP published: "Thanks to all who have sent us new images (graphics). The required list is smaller now, but still all that is needed for the update! Some of it is very important because it occurs very often and cannot be eliminated easily. So please help us :)"

The list included monsters such as: Troll, Wolf, Demon, Dog, Polar Bear, Bear, Demon Skeleton, Ghoul, Skeleton; amongst foods, containers, furnitures, plants, stones and other items. Thanks to the old WoT homepage this information was found. :-)

In August a Tibia Meeting took place in Bernburg, Germany. It was the biggest Tibia-RL-meeting ever back then, with over 80 people! If you speak German, check the news about!

We reached November, the month Tibia Beta 6.0 was released.

CIP even had a special page telling their plans for the future, which you can check here.

On November 11, "the player limit was raised temporary to 300. In order to compensate the growth of the population, the respawn rate of all monsters increases with the number of players who are online."

On November 15, "it is a pity that so many players have to be banished from the game because of their bad behaviour. Now the list of banished players has become too long to put it on one page. Therefore we splitted it according to the first letter of the character name."

Talking about it, here you can see the list of banished players back to 2001. You will probably find some funny reasons. =P

Hmm, and do you have any idea on how were the rules in those times? Click on the image below to see it!

In December a poll asked players which was the biggest problem in Tibia. "Small map with too few monsters" was the winner. As a result, with the help from voluntary map editors (Knightmare, Aureus, Ciryon, Lord Harry, Wastl, Conaria and Muesli) six new areas were created, as you can check here. One interesting was this note:
CIP wrote:As Christmas is a peaceful time, we have temporarily abolished player killing. This means that you cannot attack other players directly or with magic missiles. Understand that it is forbidden to kill other players in general until 1st January. Player killing will be punished with banishments.

One thing I had no idea of was the Council Election.
CIP wrote:This is the new election for the Tibian Council members. The Council is an organization of players who made it their business to set up an army to protect Thais, giving jobs to certain players, making laws, and organizing tournaments, quests, and other sorts of entertainment.

Curious? Take a look (Hammerfall's statement | Dustin the Great's statement)!

To end 2000, let's talk about the "Help Us" page. You heard it well, "CIP" had a page on which they asked assitance in map design, graphics and story. That's not all, you could find in there a statement saying:

Sound will definitely be implemented. This will take some time, but the sound tracks can be composed meanwhile. The format will be MIDI.

Taghor: Mercs defeat AFT in Tibiaball wrote:On Sunday the 10th march, the AFT and the Mercenarys met for a friendly Tibia-Ball game.
The game was played at the west of greenshore.
6 AFT members and 6 Mercenarys were fighting in this game without blood.
The game begun very single sided. After 2 minutes the Mercenarys had shot their first 2 goals.
It seemed like the AFT could not stop them. After this 3 more goals were shot by the Mercs. This was the half-time standing, 5:0 for the Mercenarys.
After changing sides the AFT seemed to have got back their powers. Soon after the begining of the 2nd half they shot the 1:5. This goal gave them hope and so they were able to underrun the mercenary defense.
They shot 3 more goals in a very dramatic game. But after the 4:5 the Referee Ulatheg finished the game.
So the Mercs defeated the AFT in a fair game with 5:4. Congratulations to the winning team.
After this a big party was taking place in the Tibianic, the guildhouse of the AFT.
All participants had fun and enjoyed the game and the party afterwards.
Stay tuned ,we will have you informed about the next game between this 2 guilds. They surely will met soon again.

Other nice events were organized by the first roleplaying guilds, e.g. Red Rose, AFT (Alliance of Free Tibians), etc.

2001

2001 arrived, and it was going to be a special year for several reasons! You will soon notice it. ;-)

To begin, "The Fight For Freedom" started. A mage who turned evil known as Ferumbras and his minions appeared to kill Tibians in January 2001. In fact, Ferumbras was a sorcerer level 145 controlled by the god Durin. He could summon creatures such as dragon, dragon lord and warlock (an unknown creature back then), and would attempt to kill any character that crossed his way. Ah, how I wish I had seen it! :-( Now with so many servers it would be impossible to have such a nice event. Even Santa Claus was there when Ferumbras terrified Tibia, and it was controlled by a gamemaster and future CipSoft member in those days, as reported CM Rejana in 2012:
Knightmare was in control of Santa Claus in the very early days. Since there are so many Tibia game worlds nowadays though, it is very unlikely that this will ever be done manually again.
Even back then the presence of Santa Claus resulted in a very overcrowded depot, with everything and everybody being stuck, as Knightmare remembers. One time "Santa Claus" even ended with a server crash, because too many characters stacked at the bottom of some stairs.

After a couple of days and many deaths, brave Tibians lured Ferumbras from Thais to Plains of Havoc, where an army of Tibians managed to defeat it. Well, from what I can see in screenshots it must have been an amazing and memorable day for those who were in there!

In June a new update brought brand-new areas such as: Ab'Dendriel, The Ice Islands and the Fields of Glory. Tibia now had four different home towns: Thais, Ab'Dendriel, Kazordoon and Carlin, and this is how Tibia map looked like:

Also, few new creatures were added to the game. These were all the creatures that could be found roaming Tibia lands:

In July Tibia reached 600 players online mark as well as 10.000 threads in the official forum!
From July 27 to 29, Tibia Convention 2001 took place in Nürnberg, Germany.

CIP wrote:We want to thank Gehal, Shivan, Sheijan, Sir William Wallace and Saturn who spared no efforts to organise this big event.

In September Tibia version 6.3 went online. The criminal record and the old complaint button was added. Also:

CIP wrote:To support the gamemasters, there will be so-called "counsellors". They are appointed by the gamemasters and do investigations and report violations of the Tibia Rules. Additionally they will answer questions about the gameplay and help new players.

You should definitely take a look at the 50 first appointed counsellors, you will probably notice some known faces! ;-) (Click on the image below)

In October Tibia reached 600 players online at the same time. The use of macros became illegal:

CIP wrote:From now on the use of macros is forbidden in Tibia. Using tools to automatically do or repeat certain actions in Tibia is considered a violation of the Tibia Rules and may lead to temporarily or permanent banishments from the game. Please play the game as it is meant to be played: by yourself.

Read the full news here.

In November the Tibia creators founded CipSoft, implemented Premium Accounts to the game and Knightmare designed the first city for premium players: Edron. Wait, wait! Let's slow down a bit and retreat a few months. Since the beggining of 2001, the hitherto CIP discussed with players about the Future of Tibia.

CIP wrote:Most of you know that we are students and that we have kept Tibia going and growing for five years in our spare time. This spare time will surely vanish at the end of this year when we finish our studies. Then we will have to find a job and start to work. There will not remain much time for Tibia.

But we don't want this to happen!

Therefore we are thinking about working full time for Tibia and start running Tibia commercially. Nevertheless we are looking for a solution that is best for everyone - for you and us. There is a thread on the general board where you can post your opinions about this. Please tell us what you think or feel. Every idea is welcome!

We are going to start some polls in the near future to get more detailed information about Tibia and its players. We would appreciate it if you participate in these surveys.

Please remember that we are currently planning and that no decision has been made.

Looking forward to your suggestions!
Your CIP Team

The result: (...)
CIP wrote:According to our survey 40% of all players are willing to pay a small fee for playing. We are happy that so many players want to support our work. Remember that we will present more features to paying customers than the current free Tibia has to offer. (...)

In August, they made a poll asking "Will you sign up for a Premium Account?" You can check it as well as the result by clicking here. They also mentioned the prices would be 20 US-Dollars for 3 months and 40 US-Dollars for 7 months.

After hard working for months, they released Tibia version 6.4 on November 2 2001. It came along with the colony Edron, the house system, new spells and new creatures (Behemoths, Warlocks, Stone Golems, Priestesses, Monks, Heroes, Stalkers and Fire Elementals).

They also wrote a note about the foundation of CipSoft:

CipSoft wrote:One more thing, we want to bring to your attention: We have founded a company, called CipSoft GmbH. However, these is just some legal stuff. For you, our players, nothing will change except our name.

A very old video that can be found on Youtube shows this update features - starring Taghor, Knightmare and Lady Rebel Rimule. You will not want to miss this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3-H05MfCgc

Talking about videos, still in November player John Silver made a GS killing movie and posted it on WoT boards. You just have to type http://home.no/tibia/Gs-killingguide.avi in your browser to watch it. As an alternative, you also find this video in youtube. If you want to watch a video with an old player's screenshots click here.

Premium Accounts became available from November 05 on.

What a year! <short-winded> But that's not all! Carlos Sisi, which was known in Tibia under the name Excessus decided to found TibiaNews! But what made him want to start

TibiaNews?
Excessus, during interview wrote:The living environment, of course. Even if I was hunting alone on Hellsgate, waiting for a certain spider to respawn, I felt special, knowing that a living world was above and around me. There was people having their lives, planning hunts, living a romance or feeling hate for other players because of this or that reason. I wanted to be able to read about those anonymous histories. The forum was OK, but if I could envelop those news as something a bit more good looking to read, I would be happier. And thus Tibianews was born, originally as a news only site for Antica, since it was the only server back then - it had to adapt later on to multiple servers spanning a huge amount of events everyday, and still later on including references to items, encyclopaedia, etc. It was very fun to improve each and every little section day after day. One bit every day.

Click on the image below to how TibiaNews webpage looked like in the first years

The fansite had a long break (around 2 years). On 19/03/2004 Baka Deshi received permission to add new articles to the newspaper. Since then, hundreds of articles, pictures of the day and interviews have been published with help from all kinds of Tibians. Between high and low, TibiaNews continues going strong! The first contributors were Zeth, Archmagus, milka kuh, Crimson Dragon, Dios Griego, Varisa, Zake, Greg, Taghor, Laserus, Dalafor, Vejita, Layla McFinnley, Virus X and possibly others.

The first interviewee ever was GM Lliannan. Enjoy!

Excessus was one of the counsellors back then, but it didn't take long until he was invited to join the gamemaster team.

Finally we reached 2002! What? There was more in 2001?!

Yes, there was. In December the second game server was launched: Nova. The first server was named Antica.
To end this memorable year I present you the top 25 highscores back to May 2001. There was no player level 100+. The highest level was the Canadian Arieswar, someone who "loved hunting all day" - according to himself in interview to Excessus ten years ago.

Hi dear readers!

Once again I am writing the story about Tibia and CipSoft’s development. You can see the previous parts on the links below:

Without further ado, let’s go for what really matter… According to a poll made by Cipsoft some weeks ago (link below) about 47% of the players started at this time (including me). Who does not know will have the opportunity to know and who lived at this “golden age” will remember (with me) how this period was good and unforgettable. Let’s talk about the sevenths versions!

http://www.tibia.com/community/?subtopic=polls&page=show&questionaireid=420%20-%20Link%20to%20CipSoft's%20poll

1.0) THE SEVENTH CLIENT - versions 7.0 ~ 7.6

Cipsoft’s intention was to begin this new era of development with a golden key! After a long period of tests at the new software, finally was launched the new version on 28th August, 2002. It brought DirectX support, making it possible a smoothing at the game screen, shadow effects, more complex animations and lights.

2.0) VERSION 7.0

This was one of the richer updates in matter of client actualization. It was so many changes, e.g. different chats in-game (before that, there was only one, which the player entered the sender name every time he/she was going to send a message); trade mode (before it the players should trust at each other and the trades were done at the floor and robberies were common); VIP list (you could add friends and know when they were online); and an own Tibia installer (before the file was zipped or should be run in DOS).

¹ Note that previously until then, there was no Private Chat Channel, World Chat and English Chat were named Game Chat, Advertising was called Trade, there were no NPCs and there was a channel named RL Chat. The Help was introduced on the version 7.2.

One day after this update there was a new actualization due to a bug that allowed players duplicate items. Lots of players were deleted or banned for abusing the bug.

Other new of this version was the release of a new world, Amera, on 7th October, 2002. It was located in the USA instead of Germany. Players from Americas and Oceania could have less lags and freezes because the server would be placed near them.
Still at that same year was launched on 4th november, a new world with a new game system. This one was called Secura, typed non-pvp². There wasn’t allowed the combat between players, summoned or converted monsters contrary to the other pvp worlds. Such pvp was not a bit restricted, in other words, there wasn’t a skull system.

Amera was so successful that CipSoft decided, 10 days after the release of Secura, to create a new American world; it was named Libera and was a pvp world. With the overpopulation of the Germany servers, CipSoft launched on 10th December, Lunara, a new pvp world.

Image

Picture 5 – Secura; Note that Mendanha doesn’t hit Lord das Trevas when throwing a rune over him.

² pvp is the designation to player-versus-player, in other words, on pvp words it is possible to attack other players and be punished (receiving a skull), non-pvp you can’t attack other players and e-pvp (enforced) is the pvp without restrictions or unjustified death count.

3.0) VERSION 7.1

On 17th December, 2001 it was launched the European winter update. To the Green Claw Swamp was added the Venore city and new hunting grounds were introduced at Rookgaard. Furthermore, to leave Rookgaard was needed to reach level 8 and talk to the NPC called The Oracle and choose a vocation; at the previously system it was necessary to get in the teleport of the vocation you wanted. Also it was introduced the rings and magical amulets system with several effects.

To ease the work of the gamemasters at the combat against destructive behaviors, thereafter the players deaths were registered for time and motive. It was also possible to the player open private communication channels to talk with other players. In addition to, it was launched the NPC Santa Claus and Christmas trees, that would be always present at the Christmas time.

The game started to become more and more popular and at Christmas of 2002, the average number of players online simultaneously passed of 3 thousand and 6 months later it exceeded the number of 8 thousand! Due to the success of the game the owners of Cipsoft had to hire more people and change to a bigger office. At this half semester it was released three new pvp worlds named Danubia, Eternia and Trimera and also a non-pvp world, Calmera; being Trimera and Calmera hosted in America.

In August 2003 it was introduced the recovery key, where players put their personal information and proof that they were the legitimate owners. In case of losing their password or account’s e-mail, they could recover it using the recovery key. Such addition was possible due the premium accounts. A month later it was launched the exclusive area to premium account players at the Rookgaard Island.

Image

An unique fact, until nowadays, occurred between September 17 and 18, 2003. One of the Tibia servers was hacked. The hacker had access to the central database and manipulated important informations as well as copied them. So Cipsoft suspended all the servers for 5 days so that maintenance could be done and the security could be strengthened. Soon after they rebooted the servers for the state of September 16 and had to change all the recovery keys of the players and sent it by e-mail.

During the second semester of that same year, were launched new worlds named on the Germany server Isara (pvp) and Valoria (pvp) and American Julera (pvp), Rubera (pvp).

4.0) VERSION 7.2

Launched at December 16, this new update brought several news. Were added the Ghostlands, the haunted area west to Carlin; new outfit and addons for premium accounts; the monsters "learned" new combat skills; skull system (except black and orange skulls); tutors (with test and necessary requirements); the help channel (gamemasters and tutors helps the newbies); people and monster could move diagonally; inactive players for 15 minutes were disconnected automatically and quests were also introduced (it was possible to make once opening a treasure chest).

Image

Picture 10 – Skull System and unjustified death count³.

³ Justified death is caused to player that already has a skull.

Some weeks later was introduced the automatic ban system to the players who kills a high amount of players. During this months that this version was online some worlds were released, a total of eleven. In the USA: Chimera (pvp), Pacera (non-pvp), Mythera (pvp) and Samera (pvp) and in Germany: Aldora (pvp), Aurea (pvp), Azura (pvp) and Harmonia (non-pvp).

5.0) VERSION 7.3

Launched on 11th August 2001 this update presented a new city, Ankrahmun, located in south Darama’s desert. It was also implemented an automatic spam system (automatic message block) and ability to buy/sell several items to the NPC at once. Less then one month later were released two new worlds: Galana (pvp) in Germany and Tenebra (pvp) in Brazil. Just over one month later there was introduced the crystals coin equivalent to 100 platinum coins.

Throughout this version more worlds were launched, between them: Celesta (EUR non-pvp), Fortera (EUR pvp), Lucera (EUA pvp) e Pythera (EUA pvp).

Image

6.0) VERSION 7.4

On 14th December, 2004 it was launched this version which was implemented a lot of innovations: new quests; caves on Darama desert; random raids of monsters in the cities; creation of the waiting list (waiting list for free accounts when the limit of player had reached) – previously the players had to try a lot of times until they could log in the game; also the level progress and skill bar were added.

At February 1, 2005 something shocking happened to the whole community. For the first time until then a gamemaster was fired for violating the rules. He sold the account for several players, which harmed a lot of people. CipSoft had no choice but to review the punishment imposed by this and delete the account. Still at that month several accounts were banned or deleted for account sharing.

Less than 7 months after the release of Tenebra this server was moved from the Brazilian server to other in the USA. The reason was that the server wasn’t able to provide a secure and trustful connection that met their needs, but it hasn’t.

With this version came up with 30 more worlds! In the USA: Astera (non-pvp), Balera (pvp), Danera (pvp), Dolera (e-pvp), Elera (pvp), Empera (pvp), Grimera (pvp), Honera (non-pvp), Jamera (pvp), Luminera (pvp), Neptera (pvp), Shanera (pvp), Shivera (pvp), Silvera (pvp), Xantera (pvp) e Zanera (pvp). In Europe: Arcania (pvp), Berylia (pvp), Elysia (pvp), Furora (pvp), Guardia (non-pvp), Inferna (e-pvp), Iridia (pvp), Nebula (pvp), Pandoria (pvp), Refugia (non-pvp), Saphira (pvp), Selena (pvp) e Thoria (pvp).

Re: 15 Years of Tibia: Post here!

Postby Rasunik » Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:48 pm

2002

2002 was also going to be a magical year! Maybe we could even say that Tibia really started to grow from here on. On January 7th 2002 was Tibia's 5th birthday. A special present was given to all players who signed up for a 7-months Premium Account. They received the so-called shield of honour.
Image

According to Karr Chaos, players received the following email:
Spoiler: View
Dear Tibia-Users!
Tibia has grown up. On January 7th, 2002 we are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the public release of our game. Especially the last year has been very important for the development and the prospects of Tibia. So let us remind you, the active players and those who have retired and might come back one day, of the most significant changes and give you an insight into our plans for the near future.
The four of us have finished our studies in 2001. Therefore we had to face the decision between getting a well-paid job and running Tibia as a hobby, which surely would have meant stopping the development, or dedicating all of our time to Tibia, which implied that we had to earn our living out of the game. We chose the latter option.
The first step was a change of the player administration in July. All characters of a player are now combined in an account, which can be managed on the website. Only two months later we performed the next update which mainly affected the rights and abilities of our gamemasters. There are now so-called gamemaster characters, which are able to teleport themselves to certain places of the map and to other players, so that they can quickly check facts or assist players crying for help. Moreover, there are counsellors, which cannot banish players, but support the gamemasters by reporting violations of the Tibia Rules or by advising other players. We want to thank our gamemasters and counsellors for their efforts and appeal to all players to make their job easier.
On November 5th we were ready for the crucial step. Would our players be willing to support us and buy the new Premium Accounts? And they are! Although one can still play for free, hundreds of players purchased a Premium Account in order to get all those benefits, which are only for paying customers: a fascinating new Knightmare-area, the island of Edron, with several new monster races; houses, which are auctioned and then can be used exclu- sively by the owner; beds in the houses, where you can sleep in, thus regenerating while being offline; new spells with striking effects. Be sure that we will continuously extend this list.
With the growing number of players, our server was overcrowded nearly every day in November. Therefore we re-invested part of your fees, bought another server and launched a second world right before Christmas, thus doubling our capacity. This new world, Nova, is an exact copy of the old world, Antica, except the fact that all characters have to start from scratch. If you ever wanted to be among pioneers setting up a new community without any old-established, dominating players, choose this world. Of course, you can have characters on both worlds in your account. Just select the world when creating a new character. We are now able to setup more worlds whenever the need arises, perhaps with slightly different rules, e.g., a world with no playerkilling.
Now that we have implemented the infrastucture for future growth, we can finally concentrate on in-game features again. We known that there are several things that you are missing badly - a better chat-system, the support of guilds in the game, a safe trade-dialog, just to mention some - and we will tackle them one after the other. Furthermore we finally want to replace our five years old client program by a new one with a state-of-the-art graphics engine and a better user interface.
Finally, we want to thank you, our players, for your support in those five years. We can only implement the technical precon- ditions, but you are filling Tibia with life by adding roleplay, forming guilds, organizing events. We are happy that our game is so fascinating that some of you have been playing for years, and we promise that we will work hard to keep it interesting for some more years.
Have a lot of fun in Tibia! Your CIP Team

Tibia Micro Edition is the first mobile massive multiplayer online role-playing game. After the presentation at the CeBIT fair 2003 in Hannover, the game has been launched May 2003 in cooperation with T-Mobile, Germany's greatest mobile carrier.

In February the vocation promotion and guild system were presented as features of Tibia version 6.6. Here you can see the first guilds created. Also, Guido was interviewed by Excessus (link). Finally, Tibia reached 1000 players online at the same time in this month. :-)

On April 03th 2002 the game world Premia was born - the only world accessible solely by premium players to date. Still, Bubble was the first player ever to reach level 100:

Image

Flaterry and Ygrane were appointed as gamemasters in May. These were the current gamemasters back then. In June the desert continent of Darama was discovered.

Tibia Convention 2002 which was held in Austria took place in July.

More pictures and even the name of those shown in the picture above can be found in Cobalt-Tower and URTA.

Tibia was improving almost daily. You can note the huge difference from the pictures below to the pictures posted so far (check the news about it).

Image

Image

Actually those graphics as shown in the pictures only came in August with version 7.0. CipSoft thanked Mantus and Lord Ariakas, who had re-drawn and animated dozens of creatures.

In September CipSoft reset all game worlds because several players had heavily abused a bug to dupe items.

In October the game world Amera was launched. Also, it became possible to change a character's sex if you were premium account. However, you would lose five days as a fee. I have one "sex change" saved in my history. :P But don't ask me why I did it... probably was a mistake, hehe.

Image

It was now impossible as well to put special letters like 'ä', 'ö', 'ü', or 'ß' in characters names. So players like Hälge and Bär (deleted sometime ago) are certainly old schools. From October 22th on players cannot summon or convince more than two monsters which will vanish when their master logs out or dies. Just to remind you, in the beggining players could summon many creatures and it would become wild if their master logged out. It was a game weakness that was finally fixed now.

In November the first Non-PvP (now Optional PvP) world was launched: Secura. Still, protection zone block after agressive actions was implemented. I've lost count of how many worlds were created this far! But Libera was also launched in this month to keep up with the fast growth of the Tibian community.

In December version 7.1 was released. It included my beloved city Venore, amazon camp, a reviewed Rookgaard and the notorious dwarf bridge. By this time Tibia had 29 gamemasters, 68 counsellors and 3000 players online simultaneously at peak times.

Well, talking about the dwarf bridge, for those unaware before it was built by dwarves wild creatures such as dragons, dragon lords and giants spiders could be lured from Plains of Havoc and terrify the citizens of Ab'dendriel and Carlin. Thais was also unsafe in these years.

Image

Luring, luring, luring. A topic discussed countless time! Perhaps it's an interesting subject for me to explore. Luring was possible since the beggining, but it became destructive behaviour in NoN PvP. In fact, there are registries proving that lurers would also get punished in PvP worlds if witnessed by a gamemaster. The player below, for example, was banished in 2001 for luring ds and gs.

Image

The more Tibia community grew, further worlds were launched and luring became quite common and uncontrollable. It was rare after 2003 seeing someone getting punished for luring. Even after the creation of dwarf bridge and the bridge south of Mount Sternum, there was still an area which was called "Triangle of Luring". Monsters that inhabit the Plains of Havoc, like giant spiders and dragons were lured daily by evil-minded players.

Image

As you can see, dwarf bridge once served as a vip room for a freak show.

Image

Replacing holes for ladders and stairs to make it impossible to rope creatures might be seen as one of the first measures against luring. Before it, giant spiders and dragon lords could be seen even inside Venore.

Image

However, the most effective anti-luring measure was implemented with version 7.5 (2005) - Since then creatures cannot be taken far away from their spawn nor be roped more than twice. That consequently caused the end of triangle of luring - for the joy of many.

Image

Few years later the giant spider boss amongst other bosses were added to the game. These monsters different from normal creatures can still be lured. In 2008 there was a real carnage on the game world Silvera, when The Old Widow was lured and killed more than 100 players. Today, unfortunatelly, this and most bosses are no longer scary, and in the rare occasions they are seen, they're crushed by high level players in a snap - but of course stronger bosses are added regularly.

Image

More recently other measures were implemented: it's no longer possible to rope wild creatures :-( and it will return to its spawn when target is lost. The old hunt strategy to rope creatures one by one is only memories now. Old traps such as those with dwarf guards are no longer possible as well. Whether it's an improvement or not, I miss those days when I was still a newbie and crossing the triangle of terror was a challenge. All those poison fields, corpses and dead poison spiders in the way - scary! You can read an old article about luring in TibiaNews archives.

Where did we stop? Ah, right, december 2002! The game world Lunara was launched in this month. The christmas update brought Venore (designed by Knightmare), etc. as said before, but also magic items, rings and amulets and the first clothings that protected you against some kinds of damage. ^^

2003

In February 2003 Tibia was offline for three days due to DDOS attack. Eternia and Trimera were launched and a minor update made players receive only 50% of the experience points of their summoned or convinced monsters.

In April Calmera and Danubia were launched. Calmera is the first Non-PvP world in the USA.
In May Tibia Micro Edition (TibiaME) project was finally finished. Hence CipSoft launched the first online role playing game for mobile devices.

Image

As I wrote before, Tibia was really growing from 2002 on. In June a news was published about CipSoft's Future.

CipSoft wrote:Tibia has grown dramatically. The maximum number of players online has increased from about 3,000 around Christmas to more than 8,000 now. 4 new game worlds have been set up since then. This expansion consumes a great part of our daily working time as servers have to be maintained and inquiries of players have to be answered. As a consequence, we are forced to hire some employees. This step, ranging from moving to a larger office to recruiting staff and implementing tools for them, is another great effort. But then (hopefully from August on), we will be able to provide many new updates for the game and better support for you. (...)

In July Rubera and Isara were launched. Wow! In August five new gamemasters joined the team and Solkrin was also introduced as the new CipSoft Team member who would be responsible for custommer support at CipSoft. Also, from now on premium accounts had the chance to personalise their account and receive a recovery key to get back their account in case they lose access. Finally, Tibia Convention 2003 took place in Koblenz, Germany.

In September a small area for premium players was added on Rookgaard. Something really unpleasant also happened.

CipSoft, September 2003 wrote:In the night from September 17th to September 18th, one of our servers was hacked. Unfortunately, the hacker got access to our central database. Important data had been manipulated and copied by the hacker. Therefore we had to shutdown our complete service for 5 days. Without rest we patched all servers and changed important parts of our data structure to ensure more security in the future. Moreover, it was inevitable to reset all game servers to a state before the hacking. Since the hacker got access to your account passwords and recovery keys we changed them all. We sent an email with the new account data to the address your account is registered to.

Few days later there was a small change of the gameplay:
CipSoft wrote:Summoned and convinced monsters will no longer yield experience points. This also applies to children of monsters, e.g. poison spiders of giant spiders. Instead they will also die when their parent dies.

In November Julera and Valoria were launched. Hiberna came the next month. Wait, wait. Something nice happened before. :-)

Welcome to Tibia!

October 2003 was a special month. Day 8 my brother with our dial-up connection started to play Tibia and I thought: "what a cool game!" after watching him walking through Rookgaard. It took me only one day till I created my own account and started to play on October 9th, 2003. (sharing computer would turn out to be a problem... hehe) I showed the game to many real life friends and we all set foot on Lunara. Great times! I can't quite remember how long it took until I left Rook, but it was really nice experience. The first spider, bug, skeleton, the first quests, everyone running when orcs were lured near bridge, being trapped in bugs for not having a rope... I even remember the name of the first player I met: Hieissj. I reached level 8, talked to The Oracle and became a sorcerer. I remember seeing someone using LMMs in Carlin sewers and thinking: "wow, amazing! I want that too!" In Carlin depot someone helped me out with few newbie equipments: a soldier helmet, scale armor and possibly a dwarven shield in exchange of a few gold coins.

Image

I remember that there was no skull system back then, sometimes instead of right-clicking to follow a friend I just attacked him instead (without damaging of course). :P No NPCs selling runes, hotkeys, skill bar, stamina... There were only 69 creatures, they didn't walk diagonal, they could be roped and lured far away, possibly they didn't retarget nor killed weaker creatures and they would all come after you even being that kind of creature that attacks by far (nowadays they run away). Most of these stuff started to change in December 2003, my first update. The skull system and duel mode was introduced. They also implemented the tutor system. Of course duel mode didn't work as intended as anyone could join it and kill those who joined for training purpose. Another thing that just came to my mind: one of the first pictures I've seen was that classic screenshot or fake showing Mulf and Baumbart doing the Silver Mace Quest. When I looked up Mulf's level he was around 100 and I had never seen someone with such a high level.

Image

Oh, but even before that we encountered a problem. One of our rl friends started to play on Calmera, and we thought: damn, we will never see each other in-game? So we all created a new character on that world and started a new life. However, our friend was a citizen of Carlin and we became citizens of Venore, so we though: damn, we will never see each other? We really didn't know we could cross cities by walking. But he found one of those Tibia maps in an old fansite (I think it was DarkSouls, which is now PortalTibia) and tried to reach Venore. Well, he actually ended up in that dragon near Kazordoon. He died. That was his first dragon, and I had never seen one yet. There was a level 30~ knight called Xenoga hunting them, but my friend died since he didn't know how to go back down the hole. He called me in real life and said: MAN, I DIED BY A DRAGON! and I answered: A DRAGON? COME TO MY HOUSE! Well, we were young as you can imagine. XD He came to my house, logged in and showed where the dragon was. When he went upstairs, the same guy was still killing dragons and again "we" couldn't go down. (The hole is hidden behind a tree, you know... <rolleyes>) He didn't die this time though. Ah, those times were fun. While exploring we feared going down unknown holes: "there must be something hard in there!"

Image

Anyway, since we didn't find the hidden hole to go back, we had to keep walking to the north-east and until we arrived in Amazon Camp. Our first amazons and valkyries. In the end he finally reached Venore, went to his home and we all could have fun together. You know that sentence "You will never forget your first dragon?" - that was completely. A dragon really scared new players back there making the first one unforgettable, different from now. :) As a newbie and non-English speaker I obviously got fooled by scammers. The first time I was in red hp and someone adviced me to ask for "fag heal" to a NPC in Carlin. He got furious and cast a spell that made me burn. Well, the rest you can imagine. XD I also got scammed in that trick: "accept fast!" I was going to trade two items for a bright sword, but I ended up with a short sword instead. I also enjoyed fishing a lot. But, without hotkeys and not using "Tibia classic mode" I tossed a few items items from my inventory in the water. The worst experience was when I threw my first boots of haste. I had paid 100k for it so I was very upset since I would have to make around 25 backpacks of sd to buy another one. =P At those times the top level on Calmera was Ginh. Ingek took first place later, and then Cachero.

I don't have screenshots of my early days. The first one I took was in November 2003 due to the fact that a guy summoned a cyclops in Swamp Troll cave (a place in which I used to hunt a lot), and guess what? I had never seen a cyclops before. <smiles>

Actually, few months ago I made a video showing some old pictures of mine. Hope you like it!

I bought my first premium account on Dec 13 2003, and rented a small flat in Venore. Me and three friends lived there and it had striking 13 sqms! :-D After all, we just wanted to have fun.

Image

I also created a character on Premia and tried out the premium area in Rookgaard. I became a knight and eventually played there with some real life friends (SS). Premia was also the server I created a suicidal character to explore plains of havoc the first time (SS¹ | SS²).

There you see some pictures from Christmas Update 2003. From what I remember it was Antica vS The rest of the world. Bubble was first trapped in Carlin, but survived. Smoked (renamed to Evizerate later), who had the best skills back then was also around, just like other known people such as Mulf, Baumbart, Dragonslayer, etc. In another trap in Edron though, Bubble didn't resist and died.

In the first picture a black knight, Knightmare and Durin in Rookgaard. :P

2004

A funny situation happened on Mar 15th 2004 when party mode was introduced. As english was not our native language we thought it was a FEAST mode. That's right. And guess what? If it wasn't enough, we went to Hard Rock Tavern below Venore depot to celebrate. A lot of Venorean friends joined us and it turned out to be an unforgettable party! :')

Inferna and Dolera, the first PvP Enforced (Hardcore PvP) game worls were created this year. Ankrahmun test server came later and I took pictures of rare items (magic long sword, blessed shield, dragon scale legs, etc.) being shown in Venore depot (SS¹, SS²)

Some pictures of mine:

During update time, I was able to take an amazing picture. What God Steve was doing I don't know... :-)

On Sep 16 2004 the first (and probably last =S) Brazilian server was launched: Tenebra. I went there with friends under the name I am known now: Rasunik. Tenebra was later moved to USA... (news)

The Christmas Update 2004 features: skill bars, new quests, raids, etc. (news) Some creatures were also adjusted: Giant Spiders now use haste, Black Knghts use exori, Beholders are stronger... The picture below was posted in TibiaNews back then. I laughed a lot when I saw it in 2004, haha. =D

2005

In February we had the case of ex-GM Dokein, who sold his account to other players who misused the account to harm their fellow Tibians (news). In this month I became a tutor for the first time. I have to say it was one of best things that ever happened to me in this game. I not only improved a lot my english skills, but also met wonderful people from all over the world. The fun in test servers are priceless and unforgetable. As far as I remember the head tutor back then was Alguzara (Rejana). Those times were cool, we had a great tutor community and it was much more common to see posts from personalities such as Craban. Even the gods would show up in private test servers from time to time. The missed Iscen was the next head tutor, followed by Grimrath. Here is a video with pictures from the tutor football tournament 2007:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLGebatC210

Talking about February 2005, I had my first picture published in TibiaNews:

Image

I like this picture not because of the context, but rather because old friends like Mime de Calmera, Bactac Revolution, Darkziv and Guma Perim are shown in it. In fact, from what I remember of this episode they changed the lenght of Cachero's banishment from 30 to 15 days when they found out he did not take any advantage from it - the person from Mexico just logged in for few minutes. Still, it was illegal.

In May 2005 CipSoft started to support fansites!

Since then, dozens of fansites became supported. Founding and administrating a fansite is not an easy task, so I'd like to mention them: Erig.net, PortalTibia, Tibia.pl, TibiaBR, TibiaCity, TibiaCz, TibiaHispano, TibiaMx, TibiaNews, TibiaNordic, TibioPedia, TibiaVenezuela, TibiaPic, TibiaSpace, Tibia-Stats, TibiaLibrary, Tibia-Wiki, TibiaBariloche, TibiaML, TibiaRP, TibiaWiki, Exhiti, FunTibia, GuildStats, RadioTibia, Rookie.pl, Tibia-Market, TibiaCubix, TibiaLottery, TibiaNation, TibiaStat, TibiaTR, TibiaFans, TibiaFriends, TibiaHumor, FotoTibia and MyTibia. (sorry if I missed any...)

When Honera was created in May 2005 Rasunik'Nevah was born and I play with him since then between comings and goings, retirements, etc. ;-) You can find some old pictures of mine in this thread I created when Honera completed five years old.

Image

An incredible thing is that by this time (September 2005) Tibia already had 66 game worlds and more than 45.000 players online simultaneosly! =O

All this came in 2005: Tiquanda, wands, rods, senior tutors and their ability to report posts/threads, ships and pyramids as protection zone, throwing weapons and its chance to break, necessary worms to fish, soul points, etc.

2006

In 2006 CipSoft admitted spoilers in fansites, Pits of Inferno was created and Ferumbras was back. With so many servers it is now a creature (no longer controlled by a CipSoft member). Curious enough, the first server to defeat him was Antica. ;-) (SS¹, SS²)

Many more things happened in this year: Many great GMs resigned from their position: Faerin Saron'sil, Syrn, Kaladon, Prinzess, Logain, Trymon, Miss Liisa and Excessus (interviewed five years later).

And who could forget when Ti stole his "friends" after Annihilator?

An old mystery was solved this year.

Image

Last but no least, I have to point out one thing. There was a picture I saw in my first year in Tibia which I never forgot: When Faerwynn had his character edited to level 274 in a test server. Back then we never thought someone would reach such a high level so fast. But things change. Eternal Oblivion was already a knight with level 290 by the end of 2006, followed by Seromontis.

Other 2006 features: Liberty Bay, bank system, quest log, revised Ab'dendriel, etc.

2007

2007 arrived and errrrr... :-|

Image

If you like old statistics, please take a look in this thread.

Tibia celebrated its 10º birthday! The old website was completed redesigned. By the end of this month Tibia had a new record: 57.070 players online at the same time. To celebrate its anniversary we had special raids and loots (chocolate bar, party cake, party hat...) in-game.

Image

It's amazing how the game grew. In February CipSoft published an interested article with nice statistics:

CipSoft wrote:So far 10 cities have been founded in Tibia. At the moment more than 150 different creatures exist in Tibia. Not too long ago the first automated events have been introduced. Today Tibia players can experience no less than 60 raids in the game. Also Tibia's guild system finds much favour with the Tibian community. Right now players unite in more than 2450 guilds. Every guild has the possibility to choose from 56 guild halls on every game server. Premium players can rent one of 873 houses and flats per game server and decorate them with more than 800 unique items, reaching from great weapons and armors to a fluffy panda teddy. Players who are new to the game, can ask more than 1,000 tutors, approximately 400 of them senior tutors, for advice in the help channel. More than 90,000 players enjoy the great advantages of a Premium Account. All in all, more than 250,000 people like to explore Tibia, to chat with friends or to hunt creepy monsters regularly.

April Fool's prank by CipSoft was epic, hehe. (SS¹)

Image

In July Tibia passed the magic line of 100,000 active Premium Accounts. The player who pushed CipSoft's internal counter above this limit received a very special present from them. Abertt was the lucky one. He received a golden figurine with a special inscription and a dragon scale legs.

A strange bug made players who died in Aldora get downgraded to level 0 with 65535 hp and mana.

"And the oscar goes to... Alesar!" <rolleyes>

Image

This was also a funny picture from this year. :-)

Last but not least, the vocation balance made knights and paladins "unable" to use UHs. The four vocations lost some of their old spells, gained new ones, and use potions instead of manafluid/uh since then.

Let's take a breath and return to past?!

The most coveted items and their story
Note: Some things written below are based in rumours, so there is no guarantee of its veracity.

Crown and Crystal Wand

Around version 6 Knightmare broadcasted he was going to throw few items at Thais temple. Quickly a crowd gathered. He then tossed the Crown and a Crystal Wand to random points inside temple. Both were unique items. Both items changed from hand to hand before they finally found their long-term owners. The crown ended up with Lightbringer, who sold it years later to an unknown buyer. The Crystal Wand was shown in Warax's house for long time, and eventually got deleted along with his character.

Image

Crystal Wand is now an easy-to-get item since it became part of a quest in Demona. The crown, however, not long ago resurfaced in the hands of Amazing Healer. In October 2011 a guy from Antica called Noppran Den Grymme Smeden was auctioning the crown and other rare items (e.g. a pile of 119 gold coins*). He was asking £ 4000 (pound sterling). What a shame... <facepalm>
* In the very old days strong creatures dropped 100+ gold coins in one pile.

Winged Helmet

This helmet came to light when only Thais existed. This rarity spawned once per update in Thais Lighthouse. Only a few units still exist.

Image

Warlord Sword

It was added to the game in the early years. One of the gods decided to sell it in an auction, and a player offered incredible 300 diamonds. He was able to wield this sword for not long since it and all his depot were deleted by Durin when he found out those diamonds entered the game illegaly. Few years ago there was only one Warlord Sword in existance, possibly in the hands of Imdel. In 2011 a player from Antica started an auction after claiming to own the Warlord Sword. One month later he edited his post in the official forum saying he had sold it. What do you think? You can check it here.

Image

Thunder Hammer

This hammer was an uncommon item until it became loot of Orshabaal. There were only two copies in the beggining, one given as a gift to Patryn for his work probably organising a convention, and the other one was obtained illegaly by Warrax. He was deleted but he already had sold it. When the purchaser was discovered by the senior gamemaster Flaterry, all his depot and the hammer were deleted. Another Thunder Hammer was found on Premia in the hands of Morak. And a last one was given to a Eternia player for reporting a serious bug.

Magic Long Sword

One of the most coveted items in Tibia was first discovered by Taghor and Arieswar when they were exploring Plains of Havoc. As it was introduced illegaly Guido came and took it few days later. After some time it reappared inside a dead cyclops (illegaly once again) and was found by Ghaleon. He spoke about it and ended selling to Arieswar, who hunted wielding the mighty sword before Guido find out and delete all his depot for not reporting this bug. The Magic Long Sword only returned to Tibia back in 2003, when it was given away as a prize to one of the organisators of a meeting between players. Later, Hagbard made an auction where only a few players could make a bid. Sioberky bought it and put it on sale again. Recca tried to buy for 6.5 millions (both in items and gold coins) using Alex as mediator (since the safe trade mode didn't exist). But Alex (interviewed in 2004) had other plains. He took both the money and the sword with him. After that the most powerful item in Tibia was only seen in Lightbringer's house, but currently there are no news about its whereabouts.

Image

Horned Helmet

At the time Outlaw Camp and the ruins of an ancient underground city was discovered, the horned helmet spawned once per update where now is located the Bright Sword Quest. In fact, not much is known about this helmet, but few years ago one copy was seen in the face of Eternal Oblivion and Sandee.
Alex wrote: Let me confirm that my HH came from completing the bright sword quest first on Amera. Wich happened once upon a time when people actually had to talk to NPCs and enjoyed questing on their own and not being held by a hand and marched through dungeons to click on a chest. It should still be rather hard to complete it as a lvl 14 druid though (wich is the lvl Homunkulus had on his exciting travel through there).

Great Shield

For around 1 year during the Jurrasic period Dragon Lords dropped the sumptuous Great Shield - although these creatures already existed before, they didn't drop it. There weren't many dragon lord spawns and they were probably the most hard monsters to be killed considering CIP had removed Daemons from the game. Since it had defense 42 the gods decided to remove it from the game not to spoil the game balance. It is said that less than 20 shields were looted back then. However, nowadays it's one of the loots of Ferumbras, Ghazbaran, Massacre and Morgaroth. More than 100 now protect brave knights.

Image

Dragon Scale Legs

Lostboy was a very known player back in the old days. He was in charge of controlling the house system in Thais which involved keys (the current house system didn't exist back then as you can read here). It is said that he had his own island - that mysterious island north of Fibula (which he himself designed): Calcanea Island. Due to his aid he received an item he created: the dragon scale legs. It remained inside his depot box for a long time. People say the second dragon scale legs was given to Pskonejott for "community service like reporting bugs to Cipsoft a long time ago" - according to him. The third one was given to Abertt from Titania for being the lucky one who bought the 100.000ª Premium Account in 2007. It ressurfaced in an auction held in 2011 by Exequtr on Titania (here), and later with Slayer Rush (Shanera), who supposedly bought this and dozens of other rare items with real life cash (click here to see his house). If it's true, it's a pity that the story of so many legendary items are being lost along time and falling into the wrong hands. But who said life is fair? :-|

Image

Demon Legs

When the first premium city was introduced (Edron), players went to explore the caves. Demons had been removed from the game sometime ago, but now they were back stronger and scary. It is said that Lightbringer and a few friends found a room with 4 demons. When they opened a chest they found a demon legs, 8 diamonds, ring of the sky, dwarven axe, an ankh, a blue tome and the only medusa shield and guardian halberd back then. As other quests with rare items spawned only once per update, they thought the same would happen with this chest (there wasn't a quest system as it is now). After sometime other teams began to clean that room and realised that those items spawned everyday, so these legs became common. Knightmare supposedly forgot to change its spawn, so he decided to change it and left it as it is now: The Demon Helmet Quest. After version 8.2 these legs became a reward for a new quest (The Demon Oak Quest), potentially making the value and rarity drop. By the way, some people say that in fact it was Bubble, Sir Nepech and Wintance the first ones to discover the old Demon Legs Quest.

Image

They were also the first to master the Annihilator.

Sword of Fury

Many rookers spent years reading books both on Rookgaard and in Mainland trying to unveil the mysterious quest of the Sword of Fury. When the hero Avar Tar is asked about it, he says:
Avar Tar wrote:Ah, my trust old sword. I left it on Rookgaard years ago when I left for the main continent.

Knightmare (who designed Rookgaard) has also made a remark about it
Knightmare wrote:The easiest way is to bribe a CIP member to teleport there and get it for you. I heared they love pizza ;o)
There are so many secrets hidden in my areas that never ever where found, only the obvious things seems to attract peoples attention and possibly distract it from other things that would be too obvious else ;o)

Spell Scrolls

CipSoft added special scrolls to the game so that players could learn new spells. They were available for all vocations, provided they had enough magic level to use it. The available spell scrolls were: Great Energy Beam, Summon Creature, Great Healing and Ultimate Explosion. It was really hard to get those, but from what people know there are a few paladins on Antica who are able to use great energy beam or even summon creatures. These spell scrolls were removed from the game after since they were not good for the game balance.

Kaerell Shield, Mercenary Shield, Rose Shield and Rose Armor

Years before the guild system was introduced, a few guilds were already founded. Three of the firsts were Kaerell, Mercenarys, and Red Rose. The gods decided to bless these three old guilds with gifts - their own items as well as the first guildhalls.
Kaerell guild received the Kaerell Shield, created by the ex-leader of the guild, Mantus. It has a triskelion in center. The Mercenarys guild received the Mercenary Shield. Red Rose guild received two items: Rose Armor and Rose Shield. Both were created by Genesis SE (now known under the name Tharanis) and the old leader Lightbringer.
Only a few members received the items. It's known that at least one Rose Shield and Rose Armor were given away to Lightbringer, Genesis SE, Octavian, Firehawk, Beowulf, Virgel, Silvarion and Eickmen. But... the problem would come to arise.
Almost one year later other players got revolted claiming elitism and favoritism between CipSoft and these guilds. This generated an unpleasant situation to CipSoft (still called CIP back then) since it was not really fair that only a few received it, so they "destroyed" those items. The Mercenary Shield has been transformed into the Griffin Shield, and now is obtainable through a quest. The Kaerell Shield has been renamed to Ancient Shield, and can now be obtained as a creature loot. The Rose Armor was renamed to Noble Armor, and it's also obtainable through a quest. Curious enough, one item resisted the force of the gods for unknown reason and didn't lose its identity: Rose Shield. The only chang was removing the mark "RR" from it. It could be seen along with other relics during the first Tibianic exposure organised by AFT (Alliance of Free Tibians) in 2002, as well as in an old screenshot by Beowulf.

Image

Blessed Shield

Only a few blessed shields have been given away by the gods. The first one was given to Elleshar for his contributions. It had defense 50 in the old times. He kept it for sometime till he sold for 130k to Muecil, who promised not to ever sell it to anyone except to Elleshar himself or with his acceptance. He didn't fulfill the agreement and posteriorly sold it to Lightbringer for much more money. Elleshar got really disappointed, as you can see in his post on WoT boards. Even Wurzel commented it. After a few years it ended in the hands of Gryphee (Antica). Leif Loget Olsson (Valoria) proved to own a blessed shield not long ago, but it's unknown how he obtained it.

Re: 15 Years of Tibia: Post here!

Postby Buzzinator » Wed Feb 15, 2012 6:48 pm

A New Beginning

15 years. All I can really is "Wow." It is truly hard to believe that this game is still going after a decade and a half, especially with all the competition out there nowadays in the video game market. While I may not have started out at the same time the game did, I've seen the game go through massive changes over the past 10 years. Tibia may never be the same as it was back then, but I can certainly tell you that the many memories and friendships I have gained over the past 10 years are something I don't take for granted and certainly something I do not regret.

It started out in January 1997, when the game went live for the first time. Back then, it was just one server - Tibia. Of course, many players like myself were not around when the game took its first baby steps. The game was nothing like it is now. One look at screenshots during this time, and you would not believe for a second how the graphics looked. Soloing dragons was unheard of. Ferumbras was not a boss that appeared during a raid, but rather a creature that was actually controlled by a CipSoft employee.

Between the years 2000 and 2002, the game would slowly mold itself into a good portion of the game that we know of now. Much of the "Mainland," the continent that everyone can access now, was introduced during this time. As well, the introduction of a new server, Nova, would lead to the original server's name to be renamed as Antica. From there on, more and more servers would be added, eventually rounding off at the current 77 game servers that the game currently possesses. Premia would soon follow Nova in April 2002, as the first (and only to this date) premium-account only server. Half a year later, the first American server was born, Amera. It is on this server where my journey starts a month after its existence....

The Journey Begins

I still remember like it was yesterday. I awoke in the temple of Rookgaard, completely clueless as to what I had to do. Back then, Rookgaard was very much different. No premium side. No tutorial island. No Oracle NPC – you simply had to walk into one of the four portals located in Seymour’s academy depending on what vocation you wanted to be. Amera was still fairly new, so Rook was pretty busy and full of players – a sight that is quite rare to see nowadays.

I still remember the first friend I made – Blk Dragon. I met him at the sheep pen close to the temple, the one with the little pond if anyone still remembers it. He may be retired now, but I could not begin to wonder if I would still be playing this game without him. He helped me get through the hardships of Rook, as I was a hardcore newbie at that time. I fell for pretty much every trick in the book, including the slime trick and walking into the fire and energy fields that used to be located below Seymour’s academy. To think that losing 100 gold coins when I died meant a lot to me at that time as well – hah!

After a long month, I had finally arrived in mainland. I knew what I wanted to be from the get-go: a powerful warrior, a.k.a. a knight. After being teleported to the Thais temple, my friend showed me around town. I was amazed. The depot, the mailbox at the crossroads, the people…. It was mind-blowing to say the least. Unfortunately, this “friend” tricked me into dying, and I didn’t even know it until a couple years ago when I was randomly thinking about it. You see, during this time, players on PvP worlds could kill freely without any consequences. No deletions, no skulls, nothing. This friend of mine told me that I could set off poison fields if I walked into certain spots. Little did I know that it was him that was actually shooting the fields at me. Yeah, go ahead and laugh. I’m pretty appalled at how I didn’t even realize that until many years later myself too!

Days became months, and I slowly made my way to level 20. It was that one day when I got a message from Samuel Langley that probably changed my gaming experience forever. At the time, I was in a small guild. However, it was slowly becoming inactive, and I needed a change. I wondered what this fellow would want. He asked if I wanted to join the Council of Power, a guild that Blk Dragon was already in. I did not hesitate at all, and quickly accepted the invitation. This is the guild that I still hold loyal to, nine years later.

Image

Two guild sweethearts proposing to each other. Yes, they accepted!

I would continue my Tibian adventures, spending most of the next couple of years leveling and training at the pace of a snail. A couple key additions were added to the game during this time. In the 2002 Christmas update, the city of Venore was added. I thought it was neat, seeing how the streets were actually above ground level. The following Christmas, two key systems were added. The first was the quest system, which hasn’t changed a whole lot since its addition. The second was the skull system, and we all know how that has affected the game. Oh yeah, and the amulet of life was also removed, being replaced by the amulet of loss. The amulet of life was similar to the modern amulet of loss, except it also prevented all experience and skill loss. The things I would do to bring that item back…

I quickly met a bunch of new faces in CoP (Council of Power), eventually becoming good friends with a few to whom I still talk to nowadays. Everything was going fine, and our guild even created a sub-guild just to rent out the Tibianic: Council of Power South Side. That didn’t last long, as the guildhall fees were much too expensive if you include our current guildhall, the Castle of the Winds in Ab’Dendriel.

Until November of 2004, I would spend quite a bit of time in the minotaur cave nearby Kazordoon. This is the place I called home. I trained there, I hunted there… and it was rather peaceful. What more could you want?

Image

Finally Premium

Two years after I started Tibia, I finally became premium. I thought that I would be free account forever, but my real life brother gave me the ultimate gift: a 3 month premium. I quickly received my promotion, becoming an elite knight. As well, I bought all the spells, including the ever-so-powerful exori at that time. I was so happy, and started exploring much of the premium areas.

I would spend a good portion of my time at Cyclopolis in Edron, as well as Ankrahmun. There were lots of knights around my level (40ish) hunting there at the time, but I still persevered. All I needed was a few UH runes (when they were still useful on knights!) and some mana fluids. However, Cyclopolis would eventually grow old, and I moved into Ankrahmun when it came out in Christmas of 2004. I would win my first ever house via the auction system, which you can see below (Unklath I b). Even though I don’t use it as much today, I still hold it very dearly to me.

Image

Me and my friend Ducti posing for a screenshot. The house was way neater back then!

The Glory Years

The next two to three years, the game would go through some massive overhauls. Whether these changes that the game made were for the better or for worse, well… you will get mixed opinions depending on who you talk to. A lot of these changes were made to counter-act cheating, but one could argue that some of the features that were introduced during these years only helped further the cheating problem that is still prominent today.

It all started in the summer update of 2005. Port Hope and the surrounding jungle, Tiquanda, were added. But the main focus was the addition of worms and soulpoints. To counteract macro fishers, worms were introduced. Players were now required to have worms on hand, or they would not be able to catch fish. Soulpoints helped to combat those that would bot runes such as UHs and SDs, with each rune made reducing the soulpoints.

For the Christmas update, the magic system received a major change. Regeneration speed was improved to compensate for magic levels requiring four times the amount of mana needed in order to advance. Sorcerers and druids were given wands and rods to use as hunting weapons, and spells now required a certain magic level on top of one’s regular level.

The following year, more neat stuff continued to be introduced. New outfits and addons were made available. To get these, players needed to embark on certain quests or retrieve creature products needed in order to style their characters in these fashionable outfits and addons. The Pits of Inferno opened up to the public during the Christmas update, which featured a bunch of hard monsters and a quest that would reward those that braved the Pits of Inferno with some handsome equipment, including the ever-so-popular soft boots.

Oh, yeah, who could forget one of the most controversial features that was also added to the game – the addition to make runes and other items castable via the battle window (and later on through hotkeys) without having to aim them. Let’s take a step back here. This is where it gets controversial. One can argue that this does nothing to solve the anti-cheating problem. It made one of the most important skills to have in the game (to properly aim a rune) pretty much obsolete, and was seen by quite a few to be pretty much a bot in itself. This would later include automatic spell casting. Whether or not you agree with or not is up to you, but it is still highly debated to this date as to whether this feature should have been introduced or not.

Image

You make the call - yay or or nay to casting runes with the press of a hotkey?

2006 – A Year To Remember

Why 2006, you ask. This year stands out to me, for two reasons. The first reason is because of the major gameplay changes that were previously explained. The second reason is because of all the fun I had during this past year. Yes, Tibia may be about gaining levels and skills, but it’s also nice once and in a while to get the gaming community (in this case, the server) together and have fun. In 2006, Amera hosted several amazing events put together by a bunch of wonderful and creative people. It saddens me that not too many events like this are put together anymore, and I really do wish that more people would just lay down their swords and rods for just one day and just have some F-U-N, fun.

One of the events that I remember participating in was the Amera Fest. Not only did this take place once, but twice during the year! I don’t recall when the first one took place, but I do know that the second one occurred during the Fall season. The first fest was located south of Thais, and it was a great success. The turnout was amazing, and there were enough activities to keep everyone entertained. Whether it was gambling in the “Pick a Bag” game, listening to a good old story, or making out in the kissing booth, there was something for everyone!

Image

I didn't guess correctly. :(

The same organizers decided to host another one later in Fall, and once again it was a hit with the Ameran population. This time, the venue location was Greenshore. The popular “Pick a Bag” game returned, and was accompanied by a few new games such as parcel races (in the wheat fields!) and Tibia Dance Revolution. In the end, everyone gathered around as participants dueled it out in Tibia Trivia.

Ahh yes, there was also Christmas in July, a series of events hosted by Lord Volimar (a.k.a. Voliclaus). Most people celebrate Christmas in December, but here on Amera, we do things differently! One of the events was soccer in Rookgaard, as well as free giveaways of items such as katanas, legion helms, and other useful equipment for low levels and beginners.

Tibia Turns 10 and Continued Expansion

In 2007, Tibia turned 10. Much like this year, CipSoft celebrated with some special events. Some special monsters spawned in the desert north of Darashia, which had a chance to drop rare items such as the tempest shield. Hackers, tibia bugs, and primitives also spawned, which dropped blue & red surprise bags which could contain anything from chocolate to dragon scale mail.

Image

Killing undead minions, part of the Darashia monster raids during Tibia's 10th anniversary.

Svargrond and its accompanying ice islands came to life, ironically, during the summer update. As well, some vocation balancing was made, which gave both paladins and knights more attack power as well as new spells. As a result, seeing knights or paladins hit for over 200 is not rare anymore.

It was here when I would begin my leveling frenzy. I found frost dragons to be very suitable, and quickly soared my way up in the highscores. Over the summer, I would go from level 100 to level 140. I would join a war in two separate stints that lasted for a few months until I finally decided I was done with war in early 2008. During that time, new potions for each class were introduced, which rendered UHs useless for knights as I mentioned earlier. I don’t think I stand alone when I say that it was a sad day when these new potions made their way into the game. I miss the old UH runes!

The Modern Era

The next few years, leading up to Tibia’s 15th anniversary, was filled with mostly new content. In the summer of 2008, a few areas got new looks, such as the modern Darashia and Kazordoon with lava pillars and horse wagons. In the Winter update, Yalahar would rise from the ashes, a place that is still popular to this date due to the close proximity of surrounding hunting areas.

Image
Me and a few guildmates taking down Azerus in Yalahar.

In 2009, CipSoft would start rolling out the usual two major updates during summer and winter, as well as two more minor updates during spring and fall. In the summer patch, they would change the death penalty as well the stamina system. Furthermore, all premium players would gain 50% more experience during their first full hour, which would later be extended into the first two hours. A new automatic tool used to detect use of unofficial software was put to use in early 2009, which punished nearly 6000 accounts in its first wave of bans. These waves continue to take down cheaters to this date, but with a much harsher penalty: deletion. Unfortunately, with the introduction of this tool came the end of the gamemasters era eventually in 2010. This was a move that many Tibians questioned, especially those that wanted a permanent solution to the botting issue. In the summer patch, players were finally granted their wish to be able to marry with their loved ones. As well, visual looks in most of the caves around Tibia got a facelift. Creatures in Tibia were balanced in various categories such as loot and experience/HP, and the Grizzly Adams quest was introduced for those that loved hunting monsters.

The fall patch introduced the war system, as well as the long-awaited world transfer system that would allow players to transfer characters for a small fee. In November, the Lightbearer Quest was introduced. This was no ordinary quest however, but rather a world quest. It took the efforts of the entire server to keep the basins lit for 96 hours, and those servers who were successful were greatly rewarded with shards that could be exchanged for experience and some items that were dropped from monsters that appeared after the event. Extra rewards were later added for the 2010 and 2011 Lightbearer. Finally, 2009 ended with the annual winter update, which featured the addition of another new area in Zao.

Image

Me and Zatiochi braving the Zao arena.

In the 2010 spring patch, all players received the ability to report illegal statements in-game, as well as anyone who they suspect of using unofficial software. In the next two years, they would add more report options, ranging from character names, comments on character pages, and forum signatures. The summer update expanded upon the Zao territory, as well as giving players another long-awaited feature: the ability to stack runes and potions. Finally, achievements were introduced, which players could display under their character pages.

In the fall patch, the PvP system underwent some changes. A PvP blessing was made available to everyone, to help soften the losses when one dies from PKers. As well, players were able to swap if they are trapped, and assists were handed out and shown on deathlists. 2010 ended with yet another winter update, which remodeled a few areas (Outlaw Camp, Hellgate, Drefia). As well, with the success of Lightbearer, more world quests were added, as well as mounts that you could tame and ride. Cooldowns were added on spells, which meant mages could no longer spam UEs for massive experience non-stop anymore.

In 2011, my guild, the Council of Power, celebrated its 8th anniversary. It’s hard to believe that this guild had been around for eight years. We couldn’t let such a cheerful occasion go to waste, so we decided to host a party that was open to the public to celebrate! A fun time was had by all, and I think I had just as much fun hosting the events as the guests did participating in them. I think the highlight of the party was an event called “The Amazing Rice,” which was a Tibian version of the reality TV show “The Amazing Race.” There were also plenty of shenanigans during the party, especially during trivia.

Guests get ready for a round of trivia, but wait.. what is that under a bookcase? A pig!??

The spring patch introduced the server log, where all server-related messages would go. In June, just a month before the summer update, the beta flash client was released after months of testing from both the developers as well as closed beta testers. This client introduced some new features that the stand-alone C++ client does not have, including customizable sidebars and action bars. The summer update would, you guessed it, add more new content in the form of new mounts, quests, outfits, and world changes that the server could influence. In the fall patch, the Grizzly Adams quest underwent some changes, and some more hunting areas were added. Finally, the winter update added the new deepling and hive area that connected to Gray Beach.

This brings us to the present – 2012. The celebrations have come to an end, with players enjoying daily raids, a limited time offer outfit, 1.5x experience, and a nostalgia island. As I stated in the beginning, it’s really hard to believe that this game has gone 15 years strong. The game has had its ups and downs, but you simply have to applause CipSoft for persevering through all those years. It will be interesting to see how the game goes from here. One thing’s for sure though. No matter what happens down the road, Tibia has certainly paved the way in the MMORPG world, and its legacy is unmatched. Happy 15th anniversary, Tibia.

Time has flew by, and much changed.

CipSoft

CipSoft whose number of employees was 4 until 2002, now employ more than 60 people... wow!

They even work on a third game now: Fiction Fighters :)

If not enough, they celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2011!

A nice article has been published introducing some people who spend a great deal of their time working on Tibia. You can read it here. Players were also invited to join a chat with them in the Auditorium. It was a fun thread, I had never seen so many CipSoft members posting. ^^

Tibia

Tibia is still being improved as always. We don't have as many players online as in 2007 [Overall Maximum: 64028 players (on Nov 28 2007, 19:26:00 CET], and many of the PvP worlds are empty. Probably because Mayan prophecy which says 2012 is going to be the end of the world, so people retired to enjoy their their last moments with family. :-) Jokes apart, who still plays Tibia knows the current problems we face in-game daily. But hopefully things will get better soon!

Almost unbelievable, we didn't have a level 100 back in 2001, and there are now 14 players level 500+, 182 players level 400+ and thousands of players level 300+. Who could have predicted that? I couldn't, and when I started Tibia was seven already.

15 years later, Tibia counts with more than: 300 creatures, 120 spells, 220 quests, 280 achievements, beyond 13 cities, 29 different outfits, 62 rentable guildhalls, 952 houses and 4168 founded guilds. (Tibia map 2012)

Many memorable changes took place recently. In 2009 the first world quest challenged Tibians: The Lightbearer. Efforts worldwide are necessary to fulfill these tasks. Devovorga and others world quests came next.

In August 2010 an open letter to gamemasters was published.

CipSoft wrote:At the end of August, the era of volunteer gamemasters will come to an end. It is far from being easy to bid farewell to such an amazing group like you - the team of gamemasters.

The Counsellor position had been removed years before. Well, the fansites TibiaVenezuela and TibioPedia organised the last march with Gamemasters, which took place on Harmonia in 21/08/2010. You can check the official thread here, and the news after the event in TibioPedia (there you also find screenshots).

Recently TibiaNews interviewed a lot of gamemaster. It can be read here.

There goes my pictures from the march:

Well, another big change in 2010 was the introduction of mounts. It's one of those things proposed by players loooong years ago, but that takes some time till it gets implemented, just like the marriage system. And a curious thing is that the one (if not the first) firsts pictures of the day published in TibiaNews is this one:

2010... (horses came in 2011) Better late than never! :-)

In 2011 Tibia Flash Client was finally released and is constantly improving - but it's a beta version to date.

Also, another old proposal was finally added to the game: The Market!

What comes next? Maybe our characters will finally be able to sit and rest their legs! ;-)

Tutor system was completely revised some months ago. I made a video showing the tutor exam in case you wish to recall it! ^^

The last memorable event in Tibia was of course the celebrations for Tibia's 15th anniversary. Some CipSoft members were dragged into the game either as raid creatures or NPCs. It was really fun, and I made a special video for you! :)

Our thrilling trip is coming to an end, my friends!

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Tibia has been online for more than 5500 days now. Hundreds of players came into the story, thousands of interesting articles and interview have been published, thousands of amazing things occurred making it impossible to speak about every happening in an article. Still, it was an indescribable pleasure to remember and rescue so many nice things that should not be forgotten and lost in time.

I would like to thank CipSoft for creating and developing Tibia, and sure all my old friends for making this game an unique experience for me. Thank you for all the joy you brought me and the wonderful years we had together! I will never forget any of you!

To the new players who are reading this article:

  • Fun! Make sure to play for fun. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, have fun would be it. The long term benefits of enjoying your time in Tibia have been proved by old players whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own Tibian experience... I will dispense this advice now.
  • Enjoy as much as you can the innocence and the friends you make in your early months; oh nevermind; you will not understand the importance of old friends until they have faded. But trust me, in a few years you'll look back at pictures of your character and recall in a way you can't grasp now how the first adventures are unique. And that those were by far the best moments in your journey.
  • Maybe you'll reach your goals, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have rare items, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll stop at level 40, maybe you'll be there to celebrate Tibia's 20th anniversary... what ever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either - your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's.
  • Don't feel down because you are not high-level or rich. The nicest players I met in my journey didn't know if they would get 100 one day. Some of the most interesting I know still didn't.
  • Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and play-style because the older you get, the more you miss the time and the people you knew in the old days.
  • Take screenshots or make movies! They are the best link to your past and most likely what will make you smile in the future. And be nice to your friends. You will really miss them.
  • Respect the rules. Don't expect anyone else to support you in the beggining. Maybe you have a high-level friend, maybe you have wealthy friend; but you never know when either one might go away.
  • Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will decrease, Tibia will change, you too will become old-school, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were newbie prices were reasonable, player's didn't cheat and Tibia was a better game.
  • Beware with the time you will spend playing. Don't let it become an uncontrollable compulsion. Play Tibia successfully balancing school activities, grades, friends, and family obligations in order not to regret in future.
  • But trust me about having fun!

To all, love, peace and happiness in your lives both in Tibia and mainly in real life. See you!

Kind regards,
Rasunik
