Interview with GM Dazetih

Ex-GM Dazetih was interviewed by our ex-staff member and Newshawk Necro Gardius.

TibiaNews: What can you tell us about the man behind the cape?

Dazetih: I'm from the Netherlands. I love travelling, swimming, diving and reading everything there is to be read about weird things. (Please don't send me weird PMs though, okay? :p)

TibiaNews: How did you discover Tibia?

Dazetih: A friend originally introduced me to Tibia. I thought the game was pretty boring and never quite understood the buzz he got out of slaying those stupid rats, as rats were the only animals I encountered in the first hours I spent in Tibia. However, a couple of weeks later, he showed me there was more to Tibia than the sewers of Rookgaard (something I've started to doubt again since becoming a GM :p) and I fell in love with Tibia.

TibiaNews: How long have you been a gamemaster and how did you get that position?

Dazetih: It was on a summer day in August 2005 and a friend and I were about to use our PK characters to kill some annoying cheaters just before the SP update. We had pretty similar names, so when a CipSoft chap teleported to us and threatened to ban us for MCing, we both peed our pants and tried to explain we were not MCing. He wouldn't hear a word of it, however. When my friend vanished, I thought my hour had come, too. But then he said he wanted to ask me if I'd like to become a GM....and my jaw fell to the floor. I said yes, obviously, and here I still am, hopefully much to the annoyance of Tibia's miscreants.

TibiaNews: How did the blue cape changed your Tibian life?

Dazetih: I've never liked PGing, and when the tutor system was introduced, I took the test immediately. I think I was the 42nd or the 43rd Tibian to pass the test, and ever since I've mainly devoted my time to posting on the boards and chatting in Tibia. I must say, though, that I miss logging in on Dazetih. Whenever I do, I get spammed immediately, so I haven't logged in on my original character lately. I prefer talking to friends using an undercover character. That's definitely one of the downsides of being a GM. However, the upsides (making players happy, reading hilarious complaints and reports) outweigh them by far.

TibiaNews: Do you like the way Tibia is developing? Is there anything you would like to change?

Dazetih: I like the way is Tibia developing alright, but I don't like the way some communities are developing. On some, if not most servers, people only care about power and will do just about anything to hang onto their power.

Playing Tibia is great, and of course it includes wars, but whoever is so blinded by their never-ending quest for more power that he doesn't even understand that cheating, hacking, sharing etc is illegal should probably be deleted, in my personal opinion.

Unfortunately it is hard for us to prove beyond any doubt whether such rule violations have occured, which makes it all the more difficult for fair players to enjoy Tibia. So I definitely think we should be looking into these issues and coming up with new ways to address them. If anyone has any ideas, just post a reply ;)

TibiaNews: What do you enjoy most of this game?

Dazetih: Talking to a random player I've never met is usually great fun; I love participating in discussions in the game-chat channel. Oh, and I also love reading hilarious complaints. The other day I received a complaint from an autologger who claimed that I was obviously stupid to have banished him. You see, when I teleported to him he heard a big BANG outside, so he looked out of the window and noticed a truck had crashed into an electricity pole, which caused a power outage. Obviously, his computer then shut down, and thus he logged out.

The only problem here was that it wasn't the first time I caught him autologging. His explanation was simple. Trucks crashed into electricity poles all the time in his street. Happened all the time, you see. Sure.

TibiaNews: Is there anything you have done that you wish you didn't?

Dazetih: I've banned some innocent guys (the good old missclick), which is always terrible. Fortunately I usually notice that the guy I've just banned was still online and remove the ban... :p

TibiaNews: What do you think about the "Luring" problem? There is a big polemic right now on some non-pvp servers and we would like to know your opinion :)

Dazetih: It's a problem, indeed. Luring in itself is not illegal, but luring to kill other players is illegal on non-PvP worlds (because killing others is illegal there anyway). Unfortunately, it's usually very difficult for us to check who lured a monster to a specific location and if he did that intentionally or if he was merely trying to outrun the monster. I do think, however, that the problem has been solved partly in the recent updates. After all, if you do not go to areas where there are no monsters you can't kill, lurers can't kill your character either. So obviously luring to kill others is illegal, but Tibians could do more to prevent it from happening to themselves.

TibiaNews: What do you think of Tibianews as a fansite?

Dazetih: It's one of my homepages (Firefox kicks ass!) and I usually read it every day before I login to get to work to get up to date on what's been happening in Tibia. By the way, I'm really looking forward to the new design!

TibiaNews: Is there anything you would like to add?

Dazetih: Not really! It's 0:07 right now and I'm sort of tired after an evening of banishing macroers, teleporters and trappers on Calmera, so I'm not particularly creative at the moment. But I'd definitely appreciate hearing from Tibians on how they feel about possible solutions to the cheating and luring problems!
